C350e owners club

I’m in process of cancelling the warranty as I’m thinking 48k is too low to be worrying on starter motors etc hence my question.
I would think the warranty is pretty good value for piece of mind. Particularly as it covers the hybrid battery (even though I take it that it only covers total failure).

Wow! Did you have warranty along then, how would that have cost you if you had no warranty?
I’m the second owner, bought the car last August, the starter was replaced under warranty. The job was carried out by MB but the invoice was paid by the dealership so I don’t know much it was unfortunately. They said the new part comes with 2 years warranty so let’s hope if it goes wrong again it happens before the warranty expires.

Thanks for the info, mind asking what mileage you had on your car when this happened?

The car was registered in 2017 January, the original starter was replaced in 2019 summer @60k miles and again in 2020 October @80k miles.

Thanks a lot for your response.I guess I’m still safe without warranty as my 66 plate is still 48k miles.Im also second owner bought it Feb 20 and haven’t had any problems, enjoying it a lot. Will consider buying warranty as it approaches 60k miles as I gathered from all reviews that starter problems begin then.

Can you buy the warranty with Mercedes if you'd had a gap in coverage?

While mileage is a key variable in starter failures I would also imagine that how much the car is driven in hybrid mode is equally if not more important. For example, if the car is never charged and is used mainly in urban driving on hybrid mode the starter would be used very often and therefore is likely to wear out quicker. Where it is plugged in regularly and used for short journeys mainly on ev mode then there is little to no use of the starter and it should last longer. This would also be the case for higher mileage cars where ev mode is used for local journeys and sport or sport plus is primarily used for longer journeys (again reducing the use of the starter).

To me, how the car was driven is probably more significant than the mileage or age of the car in relation to potential starter failure. The challenge for us who bought pre-owned is that we don't know how the car was driven by its previous owner.

This is a snapshot of the trip page from the app. We do almost all short trips, always charge the car. This is for the same tank of fuel by the way, last reset was when it was filled last March......looks like we will probably make the entire year on that tank of fuel.
Great stats! Out of interest what Petrol type do you use, unleaded or ultimate/super,BP,SHELL,ESSO or any supermarket petrol?

It was that long ago, I can barely remember! ;) I think I put Tesco Expensive in it (Whatever they call their premium).

i keep car in hybrid eco. sometimes put it into e mode near end of journey (although Sport+ eco is more fun!) I Charge it every night 9p/kWh and at work (free). Last nights charge time was 3 hours at 1.8kW. I have found the range to be higher than displayed, on full battery car says 12 miles range but it will do almost 14. i do not think reseting the trip is a good idea, as it looses a mile of range when i do this. Must me the maths being rounded down.

I now use the charge level as a range guide. On my 7 mile drive into work with car set to hybrid the engine only runs for about one mile. Yesterday with no charge left (showing11%) and keeping car in hybrid arrived home on 12% and an mpg figure of 63.7mpg.

The key is to always charge the battery. Hybrid mode and eco is best for economy / battery range. All it needs is the new 13kW battery to extend the e mode range to apron 25miles.

I had a new E class 350D AMG as a loan car yesterday while mine was having its maps updated. My Hybrid is far better than the e-class with its wheel obstructed long display and silly stop start feature. Also the ergonomics of the new touch pad are not as good.
Amazing stats,on petrol do you normal unleaded or ultimate unleaded/super from Bp/Esso/Shell or just any supermarket petrol?

That is something I would like to know as well. @JOSEPHPAUL is there a link to Terms and Conditions of the warranty you were looking at purchasing?

Being the cynical old bastard I am, I'd be wary of the claim limit if it needed a new HV battery. Anyone know how much they want for one, fitted?

(Claim limit is market value of the car, and by that, we can guess it's the 'trade buy' value)

Out of curiosity, I just got a quote as that price seemed really cheap compared to when I last looked. I got this:

On a 2016 car with 8500 miles on the clock, FMBSH. It's not had any warranty added beyond the original 3 years. I did look at extending it back then, but it was expensive.

I don't have a reliable source for HV Battery replacement including fit but from what I can gather it is somewhere in the region of 5-7k. It would be good to get an accurate figure.

Nearly 1,339 for two years is quite expensive. Given the mileage and how you look after it Chris, it wouldn't seem to make any sense for you at that price. I would also take the chance without it at the price. Have the one year warranty for now, although I suspect a HV battery failure would be a nasty shock for the dealers I bought from and would require some painful conversations!!

From what I have gathered from this forum problems usually start on high mileage +60k miles I guess,so since yours is only 8500 miles unless you meant 80k miles then I don’t think you should be that worried with getting warranty especially at that high price, just food for thought.

The mileage isn’t a typo. Maybe the online quote thinks it is :)

I decided that I’d risk it given I do so few miles. Poor show if it can’t do 30 or 40k without failing in some expensive fashion. By the time it reaches that sort of mileage it’ll be worth nothing anyway and time for a pure EV

@Chris-S Interesting that you got that quote. I've been paying £43 a month (can cancel at any time) for MB extended warranty (works out at £516 a year) - your quote is way higher than how much I pay

Mercedes Ireland only seen to be doing extended warranties on vans or else aren't putting any details of it online.

@Chris-S Out of interest I entered my car's old UK reg with mileage of 80k in for the Mercedes UK extended warranty and was quoted the same figures as you. They mustn't be factoring in the mileage unless you are over 120k.

@raspy That is a fantastic deal. I take it that the coverage is the same as the one we were all looking at.

Morning everybody,

Anyone else experienced jerky gear changes from 2nd to 3rd gear at a cold start? Only on the first few yards when you start, after that is very smooth, no more jerky gear change.
Found several threads mentioning the same, some owners have been experiencing the same from brand new:
“On cold start, my car jerks once on the very first shift from 2 to 3. There is no further jerking after that. Is this considered normal?”

A relevant thread

I’m going to book the car in for a transmission oil change next month, I have big hopes but based on same posts it didn’t change anything for those people. Someone had the whole gearbox replaced under the warranty and the new one was exactly the same. Then their local MB stated this is the cars normal behaviour after consulting with Germany.

I reckon my name is on an MB shit-list after I set the Ombudsman on them....
