C63 507 Caught Fire!!!

Oops - duplicate post such is my desire to meet the man, the myth, the legend ;)

MB Stourbridge have had a visual look and reckon the pipe carrying the power steering fluid has been crushed (probably not been crimped properly) and the steering fluid has caught fire with the heat. The fire started when I full locked car to right so the fire could be linked to the power steering.
Still waiting on this so called investigation team to check the car to do a proper diagnosis.

Hope you get to the bottom of it quickly, and they offer you some decent options.

First thing I thought of was brake / steering fluid, it's highly flammable and will burst into flames on hot surfaces much more easily than oil.

Hydraulic fluid has the second lowest autoigniton temperature of all car fluids, second only to petrol, but not by much.

Petrol auto ignites from 260degC

Brake fluid goes from 280degC

Oil goes from 350degC

It was the silver braided pipe that carries the power steering fluid that was not installed properly during manufacture between the engine and anti roll bar. MB have admitted product defect. Luckily the car is repairable but a lot of the parts are not off the shelf and have been ordered from Germany.....so could be waiting a few weeks.
In the meantime I have told MB I do not want a MB S350 courtesy car and they have advised they will get me a replacement C63 507 next week.....so all good:) I got motorcodes involved to crank up the heat on MB with regards to the courtesy car.
Will put up some pictures when I visit the dealership and they start stripping down the car.

Glad that there looks like a light at the end of the tunnel for you mate.

Can anybody advise on whether it would be worthwhile getting an independant check done on the car once it has been repaired by MB?.....or will it be pointless as MB should cover everything during repair and carry out all checks......I hope!

MB should guarantee + warranty ALL the work that they carry out and the parts that they fit mate, so unless they MB were paying for an indie check I personally wouldn't bother, but I understand your lack of confidence with MB.

very unfortunate bravo05.
you might only need one depending on the outcome from mercedes i would definitely want a new car!
brand new car yours not fit for purchase simple as that!
its your consumer right!
if they offer to repair and your not happy ask for a replacement car or your money back.
you can also go to mb direct but i would presume they will sort it. good luck mate.

If they have admitted fault from manufacturing I would demand a new car and not except the current car back even if it is repairable!

Sorry to hear about the incident with your car but glad that it wasn't far more serious.

Have you broached the idea of the car being replaced rather than repaired, as I am sure they wouldn't offer that off the bat since it can be repaired, but considering the age / mileage etc could be in the realms of possibility.

Just read from start to finish.

Firstly really gutted for you, but it could of been so much worse. I think the attitude you have shown by being open and fair will stand you in good stead with MB.

It's a tough call, as I would personally want a new vehicle and compensation for the events, however it's a case of seeing what they offer and thrashing it out, but I would possibly speak to your insurance company and get there advice, also make them aware of this issue as if it happens again they might try to wiggle out of it.

I really hope you get it sorted out and can enjoy ownership again.

Good luck

Gareth.

Any update on was the end result
