Definitely use 5W40.

Mercedes used to use 0W40 then updated their recommendation to 5W40. The difference is 5W is slightly thicker when cold.

Oh bugger!, when did that happen? the manual says 5W30?

Confused now. My book says 0W or 5W - 40, spec 229.5. I see lots of debates on the 0W v 5W but no clear cut 'it should be one or the other' only that it must meet 229.5. I am no guru but concluded either would be fine and 05W wasn't a concern in the UK, as it's not often below freezing and I am not likely to be using my car when it is. Which manual are you referring to that now states 5W-30 - is this a change to MB's recommendation? Thanks Simon.

Just trust me, it's 5W40.

It's never been 30 for the M156, that would be too thin when up to temperature.

You can use 0W40 but 5W40 is preferable.

Any oil that meets 229.5 MB specification. This obviously includes their own but I run Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 which is regularly available cheap through places like EuroCarParts.

This was from way back in 2012 so the preference for 5 over 0 is long standing and came from Mercedes.

"Guys, AMG Private lounge answered this question: 5W40.

Lifters are prone to bleed down and 0w40 is too light at start up, making the condition worse.

Go hard if you want to use 0W40, but the suggested oil from the horses mouth is 5W40 and has been for years now."

we'll that cleared that up then, nice one

As Steve mentioned 5w40, shell do a handy helix bottle in a velcro bag for the boot

If you check service paperwork it (should!) read 5w40 spec 229.5 used. Also, inputting your reg on the likes of eurocarparts will give 5w40 in the results

Here's proof there is a difference between 0W and 5W. You want the slightly thicker viscosity to stop the oil draining out of the lifters so much.

I got mine from here, MB Swansea, delivered in 36 hours , thanks to a tip from Jim Green :thumb:

As above 5/40 is 100% correct and the only spec that should be used for the m156.

All many thanks for your inputs, good Mobil video. Appreciated.

Sorry to be a pain, one more question....

Is it best to go with OEM Filter, Part No A0001803009 or do your experiences come with a n other preference. Thanks Simon,

I’d seen that the reference to “ lifter bleed down” with 0w40 on other forums. There seems to be a lot of support for an oil change at 5000 miles rather than 10000 to keep the M156 healthy long term. If you’re doing high annual mileages more frequent oil change sounds a worthwhile investment if you are planning on keeping the car, or want to help the resale value , keep the receipts. :thumb:

I do 15-20kpa but I'm happy changing every 10k as it spends a lot of time at low revs and unstressed. If you are a city boy driving it 2kpa but lots from cold and ragging it then you need to change more in my opinion.

Sorry about my mistake earlier chaps.... I've been going through my Owners manual, and for the life of me I cant find anything stating my earlier post of 5w30. Must have been looking at the GLE manual.

It does state 5w40. apologies again

Cheers, being the new boy I had a bit of a meltdown thinking I had the wrong oil... but the level of support and interaction on the forum is brill, really appreciated. Andy's steer on the oil was great at £38 for 10Ltrs and I think I have ordered the right filter. Thanks again.

Would not have appreciated this difference 0W v 5W - thanks.

Morning
Ben Griffiths - Cheshire Car Care assures me he can properly refurb 507 wheels. If interested and you want to go through the detail, his number is 07920 024240. Cheers Simon.

Simon

That’s good news. What price is he asking?

I’m fortunate that at the moment mine are unmarked but that can change at any point. Knowing someone who can refurbish to OEM is well worth knowing. With the 507s coming up to 5/6 years old there must be quite a few alloys getting tired. At the weekend I saw some Himalaya Grey which had been refurbished with an all black finish and they didn’t look right compared to the OEM finish.
