C63 AMG - Engine Trouble :(

C63 AMG
Hey Guys.

Well my C63 i purchased approved used from MB World, Brooklands hasn't lasted very long. It's a 2010 car, and I bought her with 19k miles on in March this year.

Got in her this morning, to a horrible ticking noise that changes to a horrible metallic noise getting faster and louder with more revs. Cars also down on power.. although no engine lights are on.

MB tech looked at it for me a couple of hours ago and they believe its got problems with the hydrollic elements that control valve opening and closing. They suspect the lower power is the valves not operating correctly.

To make matters worse, my local MD dealer doesn't have the "specialist tools" to carry out the work - and has to order them from AMG in Germany. Lead time 7-10 days :-(.

*sad times*

Was the 63 a ex demo car that had been thrashed on the track at brooklands ?

Nope - a private owner was the first registered keeper. All the Brooklands cars seem to be the P31 cars with the AMG rear diff too - whereas mine is standard C63 without the diff... it wouldn't be a track choice for them.

That said - even with track use, I wouldn't expect a hand built AMG engine to give so quickly. Jeez, I mean, my B7 Audi RS4 I nailed around brands hatch at even given opportunity and generally gave it a good hiding every week - and it never missed a beat, sold with 65k on the clock!

Must admit the 6.3 engine is normally bullet proof this is the first problem i have seen reported relating to the 63 engine - lets hope they sort out asap.

I hope so - just a waiting game now, waiting for the parts and tools to turn up at the dealership. Thank god its under warranty - sounds expensive :(

There have been a number of these across the globe and a pending US lawsuit against MB, just search "M156 Valve problem"

Sent from my iPad using MBClub UK

Another one of our members has this as well..... he has already had this work done and its happened again!!

Oh lovely - just what I wanted to hear. Luckily I cover about 20k miles a year, and the warranty has 15 months left to run - so hopefully if its going to go again, it'll go within the warranty period!

first time I have read about problems with the 6.3 V8.

hope they sort it out properly

Well, if I have to do lots of driving - I want to at least enjoy it. Unfortunately thats not so much the case at the moment. The party piece of a C63 is the engine... and well, its broken! :(

Just as an update... Mercedes Benz still have my car & are proceeding to rebuild the engine valvetrain with the hope of letting me have it back this Friday :(

Wow, 2 weeks?

Keep us updated and I hope she comes back better than ever.

Rob. I hope that you have insisted that the rebuilt engine get's it's own builders plaque with signature(s) on the air box.

Tell them you do not expect some dodgy looking squiggle daubed in felt tip across the air box. A proper bit of tin from the local pub darts trophy shop super glued on the front with the name emblazoned in Tipex should do the job nicely.

Good luck. I hope it all works out well. Great car.

*** won't buy one now if it's had trouble....

Well its still in the garage... case was escalated to the AMG factory in Germany who asked for a sound recording of the noises its making. Dealer sent this, they said perform a compression test and check all the valve springs are ok (which they are)... so its had that done and all the lifters replaced and its still broken. Waiting to hear from AMG again... :(

at least they are treating the problem seriously

Have they loaned you something nice whilst the issue is being sorted?
