C63: old vs new

From a popular motoring website

Friday was a sad day for me, after two years in my W204 C63, I had to hand the keys back to Mercedes. I had been dreading the day ever since I first received the keys two years previous! I loved the C63 so much that I ordered a new one without even driving it (saw a deal and jumped at it before some other lucky bugger got his or her hands on it).

The good news is that on Saturday morning I took delivery of a new C63 AMG (W205 Saloon) so I was only AMG-less for about 16hours :-). This has obviously given me a great opportunity to provide some first thought comparisons between the two which will hopefully help any other potential swappers...

My W204 was a base model facelift 4-door saloon in Black with 19" multi-spoke alloys, HK Sound, ILS, Sunroof and that was about it.

My W205 is also a base model saloon in Brilliant Blue with the 19" 5-spokes, Premium Pack, Privacy Glass and AMG Selectable Exhaust.

Things I like better about the new one:

- The interior (this is massively better)
- The colour (might sound silly this but it's great to have choices that aren't monochrome or red)
- The noise (It's much better than I prepared myself for it to be, especially with the exhaust button pressed)
- The economy (Obviously not what you buy the car for but it was showing 30mpg when I took delivery)
- The LSD as standard (I have already benefitted from this when I got it out of shape and getting out of junctions in a hurry will no longer be a worry)
- The speed (It is noticeably quicker)
- The handling (It feels sharper and more manageable when it reaches the limits of grip)

Things I like better about the old one:

- The sound (It's good on the new one but it isn't like the 6.2)
- The sense of occasion (The new one can't match it, it feels a lot more ordinary to drive)
- The seats (New car's seats look a lot nicer but they are rubbish in comparion to the std seats in the W204. This is probably my biggest disappointment)
- The styling (A matter of taste but I personally prefer the more aggressive looks of the old one)
- The gearstick (The new one has a column mounted gearstick. We're European, not American. Enough said)
- The integrated Satnav/ICE panel (I'm not a fan of the iPad style display panel on the new car even if he size is better)
- The engine (The 6.2 still rules IMO. It's ferocious and makes you feel special every time you turn the key)

Over the last 48hrs, I have found myself missing the great things about the old car more than the new things about the new car, which is a little disappointing. I am sure that as I become more accustomed to the new car, I will start to appreciate it more and more but right now, I am missing the W204 quite a lot.

Very honest account there John. My mate has just got the new one and he`s due to come and see me so we can compare. Before I even see/drive his, I already agree with half your comparisons. The facelift 204 is an iconic shaped car. the new one looks a bit `lost` in the car world. If you de badged it, you wouldn`t really know what it was. The 6.2 Engine is just legendary, never to be repeated ( unfortunately).....The seats in my 507 are stunning. Personally I think if you have the 204 with an LSD you have the best of both worlds, but, that's just my two penneth !

Just regarding the seats, has anyone done a comparison between those in the W205 C63 and the C63S?

For me, the seats in mine are better than I had in the W204: more adjustable, they go lower and are more supportive. Also a minor point, I can now see the indicator lights on the dash with the steering wheel in my preferred lower position, which I couldn't on the W204!

Why not just lower the steering wheel ?

What did he say?

Sorry fot slow response been moving house.

To paraphase he said that AMGs used to be about going fast in a straight line, in great comfort, with superb noise, competent but sideways handling if pushed hard.

Now they are too hard sprung and kind of second rate M Bmws. They have lost their unique ID as european muscle cars although they are faster round the nurburgring!

Clarkson still a nob however.

Is there a significant increase in mpg on w205? I'm averaging around 18mpg in w204.

Not as significant as the official figures suggest. I do a lot of motorway miles, and in my W204 got an overall average of about 22 to 23mpg. I'm driving pretty gently during my running in period, and get probably 27 in the W205.

Around town I'd say the consumption is in fact worse in the W205, even with stop/start and coasting. Quite how the official figures of 34 mpg (or whatever it is) on the combined cycle can be achieved is currently a mystery to me.

Where's Madmacstew, he knows it all ...

Why downsize when you don't need to?

Turbos are fine, but the big cube V8 was the reason many bought the W204. Me included!

I agree with all of this except for the MPG, which is better but I get about 18 mpg and the seats, in the W205 S, they really are fantastic - much better than the 204. Noise is good, better at low speed but overall not like my 507.

Saying all that, I guess some evidence to back up the above quote - I today have sold my 205 - lasted 7 months with it - it is a fantastic car but I just don't love it. funny thing is, my 507, I would say was the best car I have owned so far (RS4/M3 previous etc).

Same here. My 507 is the nuts ! I have now got the ` look at an R8` ringing noise out of my brain, and I am keeping her. :thumb:

I read an article recently in Mercedes Enthusiast mag about the new GT3 racer.
Stated that it still has the 6.2 instead of the 4.0TT as it has proven reliability and is better on fuel when being driven in track conditions.

So it sounds like the 4.0TT maybe better on mpg for normal driving but when the turbo's are fully lit the N/A car is more efficient.

Not so sure, I got 13 mpg overall on my 6.2 - new engine is more economical but I would never ever see 30 mpg.

The very fact that the Amg Gt3 retains the n/a 6.2 speaks volumes.

Might be the 6.2 is well developed and "supercharged" engines must use restrictors.
