Comand 2.0 map position error

Hello Alfie,

Typcially between 5 and 8 satelites. The problem is getting worse again. Was about 15 minutes this morning before I was firmly fixed on the road and going in the right direction on the map! Definitely temperature related. Later on with the car in the sun, interior warm, it worked fine from switch on.

Just as an aside Alfie, I see you have helped a lot of people on this forum in the past. I just want to thank you for the help you've given them and for looking into this problem for me.

Kind regards, Mike

Mike, I'm not disputing what you say but it does confuse me probably because I have things wrong again.

My understanding of SAt Nav is that there are 24 satellites moving round the earth giving location info anywhere on this planet. I am confused by the fact that a third of them are visible from any location. My rusty geometry tells me this cannot be done but hopefully someone will educate me by explaining the facts:confused:

Hi Boy's,

Thanks for the recommendation for a new antenna, unfortunately that's where I bought the current one from! Any other suggestions?

Cheer's in advance.. :-)

There are actually a few more but 24 "active", that makes 12 visible at one place, the rest are at the other side of the globe. My W221 is actually showing most of the time full 12 satellites. It very seldom goes down to 9, but I'm driving at pretty open sky, no skyscrapers around.

My comand shows between 8 and 12 most of the time.

Comand 2 should only ever show 8 as a maximum.

It all depends upon how far from the earth's surface they are. These particular satellites are 11,500 miles above the earth's surface so you can always see quite a few.

You see less in times of war because the American military move them to where they are needed most (to land a missile in Charlie's cup of tea, for example) - unless you are in the war zone yourself, of course, in which case you get excellent coverage until the missile lands in your tea ;)

Or you could install a domestic fan heater under the Comand unit to "pre-heat" the Comand before you use the car on a cold day. You will need a transformer, perhaps taken from an old computer, to power it (wire it in reverse). You could also link it up with a thermostat from a central heating system and a timer of some sort - possibly an old alarm clock? You will also want an remote override facility, too, and you could probably rig one of these up from an old telly and its remote control.

It must be great being an electronics engineer, you wouldn't ever have to buy anything, you can just fix it :D

Well if you can get the transformer to work on DC..........

If they "moved them" then they might have a problem with them falling out of the sky and also instead of aircraft going to Madras unstead of Madrid.

GPS Navigation

I heard that GPS navigation can not work in South America countries, such as Guatemala.
Which friend can tell me why?
thank you!

In fact they're so accurate the Yanks can put a missile right in the centre of a big red cross.

Back on topic, I have experienced COMAND getting lost and not knowing where it is and have noticed a common factor each time.

If the journey is started 'off road', in a big car park for instance, then Nazi Bitch can take several miles even with five or six satellites to get her act together. She can also get lost if her instructions are ignored and you go your own way. The common factor would be that the reported GPS position and her computed position differ and she gets a headache.

As an example, I was driving thriugh South London (don't get me started on that one ) and deviated from her route because I knew it would be stationary. She got lost and eventually had my location in the North Sea off the Yorkshire Coast :dk:

I have just retrofitted a COMAND 2.0 to my W203 - before I fix the GPS aerial in position, can someone tell me how to see how many satellites are 'visible' (so I know the GPS aerial is working)?
- I'd hate to put all the dash back together and find I've got to take it all apart again!

When you switch the nav on, go to the map screen and you should see a banner at the top telling you how many sats have been picked up IIRC:)

Welcome to MBClub AllanE!

The number of satellites visible to a GPS system will vary from moment to moment

But, the system needs to see three to work at all and expect 4 or 5 on average.

Remember also, that if the system is being powered for the first time, or after being powered off for ages then the system willl take a while to compile a fresh almanac of satellites and their expected positions, so don't freak if you see nothing for upto 15 mins.

Blimey, didn't think it would be that easy!
Just been on a test drive and everything seems to be OK - was averaging a half-dozen satellites and the map was updating OK.

Thanks for the help and welcome.
