Hi
Recently I have a problem with my gearbox on my clk240 and the garage say it's either a rebuild or replacement. I can get hold if a gearbox pretty cheap am just wondering what should I expect to pay to have it replace as one garage wanted £150 and a Indy Mercedes garage which it in now wants between £320 to £350

As you can see there's is a huge differences in price. The one that's quoted £150 is not a back street garage neither and has good reviews working from fords to ferraris

Regards

Can't help with the prices but is the gearbox you are getting hold of a known good working one?

£150 to replace the gearbox sound ok, the higher price seems much too high imo.
I guess it depends on whether there are extra costs, new oil, filter, etc.

It's about 4 to 5 hours labour plus fluids.

Apparently so from a 2003 with 61k

Every single second hand gearbox I've fitted as been shagged.

Get it re-furbed. It better value in the long run.

After all the gearbox woes I had, I have to ask what is wrong with the original?. Is it actually the gearbox? There are many things that can cause gearbox errors/problems, that may not actually be the box. Who told you the box is knackered? and not the TC etc Has it been checked for the "valeo" problem, or new box will go same way etc. Maybe more info?

There's a gearbox on ebay being sold by Mr Dyslexic.

The advert states "Paypal only and I won't sell if it doesn't reach its reverse".

The car is at Benz of Nottingham at the moment which is a independent mercedes specialist he said the gearbox has gone faulty. It started with a whining noise slowly getting louder and then it started slipped slipping gears and it gradually gotten worse. Won't go in gears at all! If it did a few metres down road and it would go out of gear again mostly in 2nd

That's what I was wondering.

Better the devil you know I suspect - if indeed the existing gearbox is indeed boogered.

^ Valeo is a radiator brand fitted to MB's before 2003/4 that had a tendency to leak radiator fluid into the gearbox and ruin the torque converter or clutch plates.
There is a test that can be done on the gearbox fluids to see if there is any glycol contamination.

Oh am wondering would the garage that it's in has tested this

^ Is it a MB specialist garage? If not I doubt they even know about it.

Re your gearbox, I'd get it refurbished. You have no idea on the condition of the replacement and that could easily have the same fault.
If you do have it refurbed, get a MB indy to do it.

Just don't have the funds at the moment to have the gearbox refurbished as going on holiday next month, so ordered the gearbox at Dronfields they were kind enough to do free delivery. The box only done 51k and will have 3 months warranty and also the torque convertor in it. Yes the car is at a MB Indy garage and the person is also the owner on the garage will be working on her. He was previously a mechanic at MB so fingers cross all be good.

Just had a call from the garage and they have taken the gearbox out. Apparently there is antifreeze in the oil which is caused by the radiator. :( so it looks like the radiator needs replacing as well as the gearbox now this cost is staring to spire! How much would you say labour time would be for radiator ?

Thanks

Some owners carry out a conversion and fit a separate oil cooler for the transmission to avoid the same happening again in the future.
