DIY Wheel refurb gone bad with WURTH

Has anyone had good experience with the Wurth Clear Lacquer top coat?

Wondering if I should send that back as well and choose some other clear lacquer.

Thank

That paint looks dreadful.

I did a DIY refurb on the wheels on my Passat some years ago. Best paint I found was a can of Audi 'Chrome' paint - I cannot remember the paint code, but the name was chrome. Lovely bright silver which was perfect for the wheels with a very fine metallic sparkle. It was about £10 a can and also available as a touch up stick for future incidents. I used the touch up of Mercedes wheels too as the match was very good.

I also tried Simoniz Silver Wheel spray from Halfords but it was too dark.

But as mentioned, once you buy the primer, paint, lacquer and sandpaper would it not be cheaper to have them professionally done.

It is.

I don't think so, materials should be around 60 quid at the most. Probably 200 quid for the cheapest professional refurb. My time is free but having set backs with crap paint from Wurth isn't helping.

I wouldn't have these particular 15" wheels professionally done anyway's, if I had more money, which I don't, I'd buy some second hand 17'' or 18" mono blocks and buy new tyres and have those wheels professionally refurbed.

Regards

Where are you based ?

BJV do all my wheels , AMG , brabus , BBS , MB .

This whole thing with painting the wheels only started because I ran over a large nail in our car park and the rear tyre was then shot. Luckily the rear tyres were both dodgy tyres anyway's and needed replacing soon. The front tyres still have some life in them.

So I've now put two old steel wheels on the car temporarily which I borrowed off my old man's Merc which he ain't using and took my two rear alloys off and had the knackered tyres removed so I could paint them more easily. When they are painted I'll be buying two new tyres for these rear rims.

On the front rims I'll have those tyres removed and put back on again once they are painted up.

The alloys are generally in good condition but I think using that Wonder Wheels stuff has killed the original paint on them and really worn it away in places. Won't be using that again on the newly painted wheels.

Hi

Anyone used U-POL Alloy Silver? Seen a few forum posts saying its good.

Think that is the replacement silver paint I am going to try instead. Have to order it online though, Halfords only does "Simoniz 5 Wheel Spray Paint Silver" which apparently is too dark and more grey.

I used THIS STUFF on an old Subaru I used to own. Spot on product and good coverage, though the colour was a bit greyer than I was expecting.

This didn't matter as I was doing all four but I'd have been a bit narked if I was only doing one or two of them. There was enough paint and lacquer in the kit to do all four wheels, though I would have liked another can of primer.

Hi

Looks like a good deal! Might go for that then.

It wasn't really grey in colour though was it?

I'm doing all four wheels as well however

Cheers

I'd class it as a dark silver. Trying to find a picture but failing unfortunately. :(

In Merc terms I'd put it as Palladium as opposed to Iridium if that's any help...

So I went ahead and ordered some of that U-POL Silver Alloy Wheel Paint and the difference between the two is amazing. The U-POL paint is perfect covered evenly and more smoothly from the first coat to the last.

The pictures are of the painted rim with no clear coat on them yet. The colour is a nice bright metallic silver and not too dark gunmetal like some of these other paints are meant to be.

I've still not had a refund for the Wurth paint as yet.

Looks like a great result. Well done. :thumb:

Thanks ;)

I am much happier with the U-POL paint finish as you can see in the pictures its 10 times better.

so from this we gather its not Wurth the money?

Tony.

I've got both rims painted up in U-POL Silver now, they are currently baking in the sun. Think I should wait 24 hours before putting the U-POL Clear Coat on? Probably.

Two new tyres required and then I've got to do it all again on the other two alloys...

They look comfy in those chairs, don't move them yet to put the lacquer on. :)

You've done an excellent job there and, for those who say why not just get them done professionally, think of the job satisfaction you've attained. :)

Looks a good job done there :thumb:

I used Wurth alloy wheel paint and lacquer on some second hand Alloys I bought for my Wifes 1 series to put winter tyres on, I have to say I thought the paint and lacquer was a good product and the finish lasted for the three winters the 1 series had them on . I did spend a lot of time though on the prepping .

refurb

Glad you have got your wheels right after a bit of trouble. This is a set i did.
