Having over a number of years slowly built up step by step to where I am now in the motoring spectrum I wonder do you ever stop dreaming about what you could buy if you just had £x. Part of what excites me in life is striving and achieving on whatever scale. So I wonder if you have enough money to buy whatever you want, then does the same excitement exist?

I can only compare it to the friends of my dads, they live near the New Forest and are very wealthy indeed. Large property, ocean-going motorboat, overseas property etc etc.

Their cars? Range Rover and Honda CRV......

I asked dad's mate the very same question about cars (he does enjoy motoring) and what he could buy, but he said he gets his buzz elsewhere

if you have your health, what more do you need?

As I get older I appreciate much more what I have got rather than lusting after what I haven't, but I still look(a lot) on the Merc website/Autotrader etc . Thankfully my wife is completely the opposite and keeps me under control.

Ocean going boats et al are just in a different league, I can't even imagine what it's like to have that kind of wealth - and I have a pretty good imagination.

As long as you have the above you can achieve the rest.

All of my best friends are multi millionaires With their new cars when ever they want, if does not affect me, some of the beautiful cars that I have restored over the years have set me up for life. This is where I win, the agro that they get when getting a job done is awful. I have never needed to get a job done as I can do it myself happily, and I have never wanted anything that is beyond my reach.

Thinking of the 'next car' is really all about being a car enthusiast. Along with reading about it, talking about it, typing about it for the benefit of complete strangers on the super world wide information highway web, etc.

I know somebody who really, really, really wanted a Golf GTi for ten or fifteen years. Overnight his life changed and he could have had as many as he could find for sale, but guess what?...

...He bought a Bentley Azure!!

Only kidding. He decided now he could have one, he really didn't want one that much. He kept his current car, and the next car he bought was a nearly new Astra!! Next car after that a few year old Fiesta. Next car after that a 15 year old Micra. You get the picture.

But that's the thing. For him, it wasn't an interest in cars. It was dreaming of something he never thought he would own. Once he could own one the attraction went away.

I am fortunate in that the majority of cars I love are actually pretty cheap. That means I can enjoy myself on a budget, thereby keeping my primary dream alive:

To retire in the next 2-5 years.

I know EXACTLY what you mean. I am an enthusiast and spend the odd hour on ebay looking for the non-existent barn find, or auto trader for the replacement for the W211.

Neither tend to emerge, but mainly because of budget. I believe that were money no object the chase would be very different and not nearly as exciting.

The W211 was brand new - a £36,000 40th birthday prsent to myself. As I get older I have other priorities for the cash - i'd LOVE a Maserati Quattroporte - and I guess I could now stretch and by one - but now we have a lovely houise in the country and we (my wife and I ) spend time updating and changing the house. (And at £10k per bathroom) it is a costly hobby.

So, I am with you on this. I like the chase. If money were no object it would be less passionate.

I kind of feel that way now. The clatterwagon is everything I need at the mo, and it does annoy people who still harbour ambitions of status when i fall out of it at a GTG.

Maybe when I grow up I will think different!

The lure of Pistonheads Classifieds for the cold winter nights infront of the fire and Top Marques magazine for a long soak in a hot bath has been known to catch me out at times. :o

I never stop dreaming of having the health, time, money and motivation of doing a full nut and bolt restoration of a real classic Benz or dare I say it here, a Bristol 411.

Until then, I will continue to run my R129 on a shoestring, courtesy of Ebay, Eurocarparts etc..

The only snag with any dream is once you fulfill that dream you no longer dream of wanting it,, sad but true

every day is a bonus :) enjoy what youve got .

Some dream of cars and material items, others may dream of power - know what I mean Scumbag?!!:D
Elections not too far away now.........

Go Boris, Go Boris!!!!

When money becomes no object, the toys get bigger/faster/rarer/more dangerous and so it goes on.

I'd have a garage filled with old Ferraris and Aston Martins, awful cars to drive, difficult to maintain but they look like works of art. They were built in a time where form was more important than function.

The only car I've got excited about getting in the recent past is the C63 Estate I've booked a place for on the waiting list. I've just ended up getting something for just transport up until I saw that car, in fact I was simply going to order another Saab or Audi A4. The thing is, I'm likely to get bored with it after 6 months and wish I'd got a 2.0T Audi as the suspension will be so damn hard or something equally annoying.

My personal passion is old cars, but if money become no object I'd get my kicks from boats, huge boats...and fixed winged aircraft, preferably warbirds (a P51 Mustang would really float my boat).

I'd love to indulge my passion for 2 wheels more, but a leg held together by metalwork + family say otherwise :).

Money no object I'm with the classic theme too with a man to look after them like Bernie Ecclestone has!
