Who remembers the mk2 RS2000 in "The Professionals"? :D

You mean this :)

My better half had a Mexico and left it by the side of Richmond Bridge (Surrey), she forgot the tide came up there, when she returned the water had filled the headlights. Not a happy bunny we got it all dried out and she drove it for a couple years. Her favourite car.

A great day for watching this happen again will be the 1st March .... which is the highest tide of the year ....(7.78m)

Down the sideroad that you mentioned Peter , there will be loads underwater and in front of the White Cross on Richmond riverside ..... always good for a giggle.....

Expect the lifeboat will be out recusing walkers stranded on high ground off the towpath too , Marble Hill park is a favourite for this ...

last year they rescued a really fat Nanny and the local paper ran the headline 'Large Woman in River Rescue'

IIRC the mk1 RS1600 had a DOHC engine, faster & rarer.

The mexico has a 1601cc OHV with 4 branch manifold as standard.
Differences from others are:
They always have a black roof lining,
anti-roll bar on rear,
slightly flared arches,
6 clock dash,
re-inforced front turrets and a few other things I can't recall right now.
Reverse gear is not push down, left and forward, but, over to the rear.
The gearbox I bought last year was £650 for a genuine one:crazy:

I was just looking on Ebay for a Mk1 Lotus Cortina and all I could find was a bog standard steering wheel, £510!!! I dread to think how much the gearbox would set you back. I found a trader selling the actual car for £13995!!!!!! I suppose this car is the great great grandfather of the Sierra in this thread.

I have a mk1 escort mexico in a mates' garage that is 100% original, but will need some work done on it.(I have owned this car for 17 yrs)
Is this classic a 'barry' (crap word if you ask me) car too?????

I had one of these and it was one of the most enjoyable cars I have ever owned. The performance was quite good for the era and the handling was so predictable it was a joy to drive. Maintenance was so simple and performance parts so easy to fit and so effective.

I envy you GRAAV888 this is definately a classic Ford.
