Don't think Mercedes has to worry about BMW just yet....

To be honest, I like BMW as I own a 525d (2009) and was contemplating buying the new shape 530d ... but after seeing Mercedes' new E350 CDI, I just fell in love. It looks so much better than the new 5 series, and the interior is so much nicer too. I hate that BMW have decided to follow Audi and twist the centre console towards the driver, that really gets on my nerves!!

LOL.

BMW try and make the 1 look like a Daewoo from 10 years ago.

MB try and make the A look a bit like a BMW 1 from 5 years ago.

I did think that, you're spot on there:D

I like the new concept version though, even though it does look like chris bangle got shifted from BMW to Merc and went "MORE FLAMES"!

I think BMW and Mercedes are switching places in terms of styling, Mercedes are starting to look more aggressive and 'more show than go', while BMW's (5 series especially) are starting to look more elegant. The 1 series is a pig though, no doubt about it.

The new 1 series shocked me too the first time I saw it....and they are coming from a car that was not good looking to begin with (1M aside due to aggressiveness :-) ). The goal is open for the new A-Class to score!

..I think you'll find BMW were the first for that remember the E30's?

The new Alfa Giulietta is the same (although with the grill looks even more like an anime character).

I think out of the newer small European cars the Citroen DS3 looks really good, no clue about how they actually are to live with though.

On the subject of new Euro cars I always find I don't like them when they come out but after a year or 2 they grow on me and I really like them, the W212/E coupe are good examples, I wasn't sure about them at all at first but now I think their really good looking cars, same with the E60 5 series, although not sure I like the new BMW range just yet.

Why did i not know of the GLK til now? Just googled it.

Oh, the horror...

saw one of the bm's on the road today , they are so small they look like noddy's car !

I think the 1 series is what you would call an 'aspirational car' - for people who want to aspire to the BMW brand, but cannot quite afford it - that said, there for the grace of God have gone all car manufacturers, including MB ! - but I suspect that many people buying the early 'A' Class did so for reasons of buying into a solid brand, rather than aspiration - I myself started life in a C-Class Sports Coupe that was designed as an entry level car,to hopefully get people embeded in the brand and hopefully move with time up the model ladder,as I have done myself. That said though,as I glide majestically along on the road,I am frequently passed by these BMW 1 series and lets just say that the drivers seem to fit a certain demographics - young, aspirational and I have even been cut up by one a few times - the look they give is as if they are driving a top of the range 6 series ! - I just laugh.

Yes, & they moved away from it, & now have returned back to it, which I dislike. Although Bangle's influence on the e60 was very good, as that (my current car) looks incredible to me. The new F10 however, is just pants! That's why I'm looking to buy a new E350 CDI instead of staying on with BMW.

Agreed with the new 1, 3 and 5, but, I reckon they've got it just right with the new 6!

I agree, the new 6 Series is erring on slightly bland, but it's a whole load better than its bulbous-****d predecessor.

If the 1 series is such a ugly looking car why is there so many on the road ?, and why are mercedes looking to copy it with the new a class concept.

That is a very good question!

There was a point at which BMW were sort of giving them away on fairly low monthly deals.

I've also seen quite a few in company car parks so I think deals were being done to shift them either direct to employees or to company fleets.

company cars/leased motors?

A few years back the only head turning low end company car was the mini a trend started by Foxtons (london) and followed by many more, then we saw the beetle and an obvious choice was the 1 series as it filled a void.

You see, that is the one thing I didn't like on my 535d sport touring, the interior, it was pants and had lost the driver focus of BMWs.
I am glad to see a return to the dash that wraps around the driver.

And, we have a new 5 series and I think the interior is sublime, far nicer than the current E Class imho, think the Merc has it beat everywhere else, but the interior on the Merc, which is available in any colour as long as it is black, is just not up to scratch imho.

And at night it just gets better, feels more like a private jet than a car!

That 1 series is pretty dire though, although, BMW do have a habit of bringing out shapes that shock at first and then after a while they look great and everything else look dated. So I will hold on before deciding.
But right now it looks like a face only a mother could love.

Shame as I love the original 1 series, had two of them and they are fantastic cars to drive and own. There is a reason they sell so well.

Asian design?
No, sorry it's been done before...
