Hi All,
I have a E320cdi Auto 2001 w210 with 75k miles on clock.

Car is mainly used at weekends, and I have noticed now that every time I use, the following symptoms.

* Will not change up gear above 3rd? I think.
* Speed limiter or cruise control when activated via stalk gives a beep and malfunction in Speedtronic fault message is displayed in message centre.
* Tip tronic in gear box + ,or - does not work

If I pull over and turn off engine and restart the fault goes away.

Can any one help me on this ? all tips very welcome.

Kind regards

Automatic Transmission

My C220 CDI '01 Automatic Transmission has failed after 42K miles. I would expect more from Mercedes Benz. Has anybody else had this failure after such low mileage

Thanks all,
used it yesterday it was a lot warmer and no problems - drove like a dream.

I read on the forum that computer keeps gears low to enable catalyst to get up to temperature more quickly. Is this only on petrol versions and could mine be doing this ?

Yes they do hold lower gears to get the CAT up to temp quicker, but should only be for the first 1/4 mile at the most.

i have 2002 model W210 i had it from new havnt had any major problems with it car is been perfect glad i didnt sell it :D.... as for your problem others said sounds like an ECU fault get it to mercedes.... btw have u had it re-maped ?

Had this problem on our 2000 E320 CDi. Turned out to be the conductor plate in the auto box (the conductor plate contains some of the electronics). Cost £500 to fix but that included new fluid and filter (which I was going to do anyway).

Thanks Guys for all of the input.
PJH- do diesels hold the gear to allow cat to warm up ?

Dave K - will get merc to check it. Did yours do it all of the time or only on cold mornings ? Also did it it reset upon restart ?

Thanks again...

Mine did it intermittently - cold or warm. When the problem first arose, it would usually reset upon restart. However, it suddenly got worse and would never reset.
