E320 CDI (W211) - Nokia 6310i car kit

I changed my 6310 for a 6600 and don't miss the 6310 at all. The 6600 is so much nicer to use, for everything from making call, texting, wap surfing etc, plus it has a pretty good quality camera and video clip recorder. Also has a built in speaker phone.

My single complaint : I use it for a lot of conference calls, and it would be nice to have a separate mute button, instead of having to scroll though a menu to mute the MIC . . . are you listening NOKIA ? :D

S.
They can hear you, but they're not listening ;)

I retrofitted the factory phone kit to my 1999 r129 SL500. It was a pretty expensive job but for me it was worth it in order to use the Audio 30 head unit to operate the phone.

Expensive option lacking function

Took delivery of my E270 3 weeks ago and to-date the only glitch is that £500 mobile phone kit!

Using differenmt 6310i; dial out and you can't hear the caller, it is as if the speaker is on mute.

Supplying dealer, miles away, diagnoses the cradle (generally a problem if you have a Q5xxxxx or lower) over the telephone.

Seaking a fast local fix I contact the local dealer. They waste 2 hours of my time and tells me that the cradle has to be replaced but can't do the job for 3-4 weeks.

Also the telephone functionality is poor. I am told you must have a seperate entry for each number stored. Thereby losing the Nokia function of storing office, mobile, etc numbers under just one name. One step forward - 2 back?

PS Is Jeremy Clarkson right about MB dealers?

Sounds like the cradle. Cause if you lift the phone out and hold it up to your ear it mutes the external speakers.

And yes , you can't access the multiple numbers. Maybe thats a good thing as when you recieve a call , you dunno which number its come from ;).

As steve pointed out to me at the GTG :)

Well if I had been loyal to Nokia and used their car kit - the mobile flashes up with the person's name and also shows the contact number.

That said the MB kit is lacking a noddy function, i.e. select a name then a number, given its price tag.

Andy

I also recommend the factory fit which I have on the S211. It really is superb and worth the money. However I can also recommend an installer from the Midlands - Fitz at Installs R Us - he is a Merc specialist (does all the local dealer's work) - and also fits other kit - Origin b2 etc. I have used him twice in the past, and he is superb. If you would like his number, PM me.

Matt.

thats a job for me too in a week or so on me new SL 320 , got to get an APS 30 first.

An unexpected twist????

This statement from Nokia may make your retro install arguments null and void? Unless you hurry...

****
As from the end of June 04, stocks of the Nokia 6310i mobile phone will no longer be available as Nokia will withdraw this handset due to it coming to the end of its product lifespan. Unfortunately, none of the new Nokia products coming along to replace this product will fit this existing accessory suite. This includes the fully installed cark91. Nokia’s rationale for making the switch is to allow their new devices to benefit from new technologies that are available today and that these require different connectivity into the handset.
****

I guess it depends how much you want the 6310i/bluetooth capability. Get it now if you really want it. I'd love to know what's replacing it as their main 'business' model. I was just about to upgrade from my 6210 but I'm going to wait and hope the new one is an exciting development.

I would love to know too , as none of their current handsets are really business models.

They are all geared towards Schoolkids looking for their new bling.

Its a mistake nokia ..... they will live to regret it :(

Wouldn't get too excited... the only reasonable candidate for a widely adopted "business" phone at the moment is the 6230 (available now, in large volumes, only Series 40 monoblock with bluetooth etc...) The upside being that you probably won't have to change your wired carkit again for another 6-8 years.

If high speed data and fax are required though, the 6820 may pip it to the post.

I spoke to a Nokia dealer yesterday and he said Nokia will continue supplying the 6310i for at least another year or until they have developed a phone that will slot into the existing cradles or some form of adaptor fitting.
Hope this is the case.

An adaptor like you say is a great idea in principal, but technically unfeasible. Its a software as well as an interface and voltage incompatibility, plus it makes far better business sense to force CARK91 users to upgrade to a brand new kit if they get a new phone...

I think the 6310i has at least 6 months of profitability left in it, especially since a software upgrade has just been released.

does this mean MB will go onto fitting bluetooth?

MB will have BlueTooth before the end of the 2nd Quarter. How long it takes to hie the showroom is another story.

The wonderful news is that there will be a replacement module for older MB cars that replaces or augments the in car system.

You may as well get the pre-wire even if it costs a lot .... that will always be needed and there are many reasons why you dont want SNOTTY-PHONES digging around in your Benz.

When I picked the car up from the Stealers this evening I spoke to one of the guys about it.
He says the cradle and a module will have to be changed and that it shouldnt cost too much. Yeah right!
He also reckons that they will have these modules for a number of phones by the end of the year but he thought Nokia had changed their mind and were going to continue with the 6310i for the time bieng.

(I must learn how to do that 'quote' thing one day).

Nokia have not retracted their statement on the 6310i (sorry to sound bullish but I work for a mobile telco) so the MB dealer is just blagging to try and get a potential handset/carkit sale. He may not even be aware of Nokias plans yet!

Due to the volume of handsets in the market place you'll almost certainly be able to get them for a while to come from various outlets but their statement does suggest they are withdrawing them. I would assume this means the stock too but hate to think of the cost of doing this and scrapping them!!

Hit the "quote" button at the bottom of the reply :D

Out of interest which telco do you work for Andy? I work for Nokia Mobile Phones myself... Can you be any more specific with your source please, as its news to me

I knew there would be an obvious answer! I can see the box to check but it stays greyed out. Maybe I'm not important enough as I can't put smileys into the text either.

My source of info comes via our intranet and internal comms team. We have a variety of handsets to choose from as our company phones but most people plump for the 62xx/63xx range. The favourite being the current 6310i.

I daren't say which one I work for as everyone has a favourite and worst telco (everyone has had a bad experience at some point) and I don't want to spark of a debate! Sorry!

Just re-read that and it sounds a bit pretentious! Sorry. I'll PM you.
