Experience with HIDS Direct LTD

That chart you have is NOT correct at all and is inaccurate - refer to following link.

http://toymotorsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/hid-color-temp-chart.jpg

If anyone is talking rubbish its you and I am not wrong and yes I have been stopped 4 times and contested and no ticket - apart from being a lot brighter my HID kit looks no different to the DRL kits which have xenon bulbs in some models by the manufacturer in what would have been fog lamps.

Look forward to blinding you on the road grandpa if I ever see you.:D

The finish on the 8k bulbs is pure white with a tint of blue and not like your chart.

You very clearly have very little knowledge or experience on HID kits and colour temp and finish of the actual bulbs.

Not having read all this thread but enough to realise that you are trying to argue a point that is blatantly wrong!

Firstly, fitting HID in to fog lamps is laughable..... you are obviously one of the inconsiderate drivers that uses fog lamps when the visibility is above 100m, which IMO the police are needing to exercise the 3 points and a fine for more often.

When there is fog they are going to be absolutely no use whatsoever and you are going to become an even bigger threat to other road users.... yet again!

From above 8K is not pure white, the closest is 4.3K.

And I reckon that on the packaging of the after market HID there is a statement that the set is for show use only and not for road use! This has been on all of the after market kits I have seen.

I think it's been well established that Flash is a plonker.

Interestingly there's been an argument in the 'Drive' section of the Sunday Times (which one would assume is read by people with a brain) over the past couple of weeks in which some people support the idea that you have to use fog lamps because driving on sidelights is dangerous because they are not bright enough!! One wonders what these idiots think headlamps are for!

Quite clearly from the tenor of the correspondence, some people have no regard whatsoever for the law, and even less for their fellow road users.

personally I find twts with rear fog lights on more a pain than front fog. DRLs appear to be as bright as some old style fog lights fitted to pre 2009 cars. Neither personally cause me to be dazzled.

Annoying more than anything really as opposed to blinding as it is just a disregard to other road users.

...driving on sidelights is dangerous because they are not bright enough!! ...

Do you mean 'driving on parking lights...'?

If so then that's an oxymoron...

He means driving using side lights. Parking lights are different as they only illuminate one side at a time and not the number plate or instruments.

Nothing wrong with driving using sidelights only.

Under what circumstances would you want to do that?

To my mind the only reason to prefer use of 5w sidelights to 55w headlamps is when the engine is switched-off and the battery isn't charging.

I can't think of a good reason not to use headlamps when the engine is running and the car is being driven on a public road?

Whilst I don't do it, it is perfectly legal to drive with just sidelights on in well lit areas and speed is limited to 30mph..

You MUST

ensure all sidelights and rear registration plate lights are lit between sunset and sunrise
use headlights at night, except on a road which has lit street lighting. These roads are generally restricted to a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) unless otherwise specified
use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226).
Night (the hours of darkness) is defined as the period between half an hour after sunset and half an hour before sunrise).
Laws RVLR regs 3, 24, & 25, (In Scotland - RTRA 1984 sect 82 (as amended by NRSWA, para 59 of sched 8))

You MUST NOT

use any lights in a way which would dazzle or cause discomfort to other road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders
use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves to avoid dazzling other road users (see Rule 226).
In stationary queues of traffic, drivers should apply the parking brake and, once the following traffic has stopped, take their foot off the footbrake to deactivate the vehicle brake lights. This will minimise glare to road users behind until the traffic moves again.

This is why I swapped out my sidelight bulbs for some Old WWII anti aircraft search light bulbs.

And a couple of these on the roof?

This is why trucks can legally be covered in blue LEDs. When I'm King, these regulations will be amended... ;)

All the lights are inside the cab which is why they get away with it as far as I know.

The regs are clear - so long as they don't flash, move, give off rearward light or resemble a beacon, exterior blue lights are fine.

You'd need the "interior" argument to get away with red lights facing forwards though, like the Scania badge on the rear inside wall of some cabs.

Quite right, but you ought to present the whole picture.

Rule 115

You should also

  • use dipped headlights, or dim-dip if fitted, at night in built-up areas and in dull daytime weather, to ensure that you can be seen
  • keep your headlights dipped when overtaking until you are level with the other vehicle and then change to main beam if necessary, unless this would dazzle oncoming road users
  • slow down, and if necessary stop, if you are dazzled by oncoming headlights

Some actions or omissions may be legal, but they are not always wise, which is why, I assume, you, like me, don't drive on sidelights.

This morning in the half light whilst waiting at a T junction I saw several vehicles approaching from my left. As they drew closer I realised that there was a car which I hadn't seen, the front car, whose presence was masked by the fact that it was being driven on sidelights which were rendered 'invisible' by the headlights of vehicles following it. The front car was, I think, a Nissan Micra with two pin pricks of light at the front.

I agree with the premise that sidelights are fit only for parking.
