F1 2024

Decent race though, enjoyed it.
Absolutely. Who’d have thought (at the beginning of the season) that we’d be enjoying such a variety of podiums & race winners.

In another note I wish McLaren would stop being so bloody British about team orders. Points are EVERYTHING come the end of the season:

‘Oscar, let Lando though to P2 on the last lap!’

It’s what Ferrari & RB have always done to challenge for the WDC

Agree.

Haven't seen the race, too busy over the last couple of days enjoying the west shorelines of Thirlmere and Windermere. We had the the places almost to ourselves, whilst August mayhem seemed to ensue on the eastern sides :dk:

Another book I have put a huge amount of effort in to will be launched in Europe at FOS next weekend. I have an invite but won't be back from the Lakes until Sunday...
But...here is Zac Brown receiving his copy (with author Neil Smith left) at Monterey a couple of weeks ago.
Not sure Zac will be smiling quite so much today......despite being owner of one of the XJR9 Jags from that period.
The book actually weighs almost 4kgs, that's a massive amount of information!

McLaren now need their strategy to match their cars pace!

I also suspect that they are being damaged by the different character of the drivers.

McLaren have two very good but slightly imperfect drivers. And I think they've been unlucky in the way those imperfections interlock on track.

I think Norris is better in clear air over race distance. Piastri is more aggressive and effective in close racing.. So Piastri will get the jump in those first few laps - and then is a fraction off the maximum pace of the car over the distance. Norris ends up behind and in dirty air and can't optimise his tyres and the car on his own terms which impacts his faster pace over distance.

In summary. If Piastri hadn't muscled his way past Norris at the start then chances are Norris's pace would have been a bit better and Ferrari would have blinked on the one stop or Norris would have managed to catch him.

So with hindsight (IMO) Piastri's move at the start in effect cost McLaren a one-two. Norris would be closer at 52 points behind Verstappen in the drivers' standings and McLaren would be 2 points ahead in the constructors' standings.

As this happened on track, and Lando was left getting himself out of position (and into 3rd) to give Piastri enough room, I was thinking the exact same thing.
There seems to be some political shenanigans behind the scenes, and I fear that this will mean McLaren miss out on both Driver's and Constructor's championships this year as a result.

Piastri took points off Norris in Austria.

My feeling watching the pass today is that Piastri was confident Norris would concede the space he needed. I wonder if he would be as confident against another team's driver.

Then there was the (lack of) double stacking incident at Silverstone - Piastri ended up compromising his own race by running too aggressively behind Norris.

Mark Webber's career was compromised by having Vettel as his team mate. I wonder if that is in part behind Piastri's approach to his established team mate.

Hi,
Maybe Mactech can confirm this - but I believe that the Constructors championship is seen as more important to teams (probably for sponsorship & financial reasons) whereas for most fans - it’s the Drivers championship that is more important to them.
For that reason - we often see a disconnect between the team strategy and what the fans would like to see happen during a race.
On two occasions now - I would have liked Lando to have prevailed over Oscar - even yesterday by yielding to him so that Lando could have scored 2nd place
Cheers
Steve

Yep.
