So you felt the need to start a new one?
Choose any number you like.99% is simply not a correct figure. There are all sorts of reasons why people are fat, you'll probably never know the actual reason and thus should not judge. How about PCOS for one? And not everybody can control their weight with thyroid medication, at best they can stop it increasing. Everybody is different.
But like the OP said this isn't a discussion about fat people - it's about an inapproproate comment and what I consider to be an inappropriate response. But it seems I'm the only one on this thread who doesn't feel a knee jerk, unconsidered attack on a person's weight was the wrong thing to do. Which just further confirms the sorry state of society.
I’d wager that most fat people do not have fat grandparents or great-grandparents - blaming genes is a load of BS. I’m pushing 70 and when I grew up you rarely saw fat people. No one is fat because of there genes. There genes may make them more likely to retain fat.....but they still have to eat more calories than they burn off to put on weight. ............etc
Well said. I agree with that.Choose any number you like.
The fact is that we spend too much time making excuses for and defending people who are only letting themselves down.
This new culture of plus size clothing, you are beautiful and 'flaunt those curves’, featurnig overweight people in glamour advertising etc is simply normalising something that is not normal. It is not normal for people to be as fat as they are!
However, that said I’m not from a generation where children were told that there is no loser or winner and “you are a winner because you competed” . We live with a generation of people who simply have no idea how to cope with what life throws at them and everybody is too afraid to say anything except to molly coddle them.
Let’s stop making excuses and enabling them.

I may be wrong about 99% and it was simply a number thrown out there however, most (by a big margin) overweight people (and I include myself) are overweight due to lifestyle and nothing else.
Let’s stop making excuses and enabling them.
How about we stop villainising them and just let them get on with their lives? They're just people like you and I and shouldn't be treated as 'abnormal'. There is no normal or abnormal, there are just differences, and everyone should be allowed to live their lives as they please (within the law obviously). I'd like to be clear that I wasn't defending this woman just because she was overweight, that has nothing to do with her actions. I'm just defending a group of people who generally get judged a lot. Why shouldn't they be able to live in peace with the rest of us with their choices respected in the same way you expect your choices to be respected?
Precisely. No one is personally attacking anybody and yet we have a bunch of (dare I say it) woke people who feel the need to defend them.
All I’m saying is that we need to stop making excuses .........
Fortunately, some sensible professors at the university of Cambridge pushed back against the woke VCs dangerous edict that all employees should "respect" others' opinions. It was changed to "tolerate", thankfully.rest of us with their choices respected in the same way you expect your choices to be respected?
I don't believe I've made excuses for anybody, I just expressed an opinion that people should be able to live their lives and make choices on their lifestyle without judgement from others. You can have whatever views you like, that's your prerogative, I'm simply expressing my own opinion. I think poking somebody in their leg and using their size in an argument constitutes an attack?
I had to Google that! It’s curious that we so often hear about wokeism and snowflakes on this forum but never the term Gammon…
