Another simples.

Some people are just fat
Some people are fat because they are greedy and lazy and moan about it
Some people are fat because of genes and health issues

Its how it is, do I give a toss either way, not in the slightest.

Aren’t #1 & #3 the same thing?

However 99% of the time #2 is true.

Someone mentioned thyroid problems - I have a thyroid problem and there is a pill for it - no excuses & I am overweight (not grossly) but it is through too much beer....... & wine ..........& G&T.........& good food................and being a lazy b@$t@rd.................&&&

Well done lad. She was taking the pee and trying to put you down about the dogs wearing jackets but got both barrels back and she didn’t like it

99% is simply not a correct figure. There are all sorts of reasons why people are fat, you'll probably never know the actual reason and thus should not judge. How about PCOS for one? And not everybody can control their weight with thyroid medication, at best they can stop it increasing. Everybody is different.

But like the OP said this isn't a discussion about fat people - it's about an inapproproate comment and what I consider to be an inappropriate response. But it seems I'm the only one on this thread who doesn't feel a knee jerk, unconsidered attack on a person's weight was the wrong thing to do. Which just further confirms the sorry state of society.

No one is fat because of there genes. There genes may make them more likely to retain fat.....but they still have to eat more calories than they burn off to put on weight. Where are all the genetically fat people in famine struck countries!! The slow metabolism nonsense is the other one....fatties put lots of strain on their hearts and so actually give themselves a much faster metabolism than average weight folks and burn off more calories....so they eat even more to make up !!! There was a good series where people who were overweight and swore they ate no more than slim folks were tracked and followed without their knowledge....they all ate loads more than they realised or admitted too. Eat less, move more, you will loose weight....no getting around that! From a site a found when googling this.
"“We know from research that some genetic predisposition increases your risk to be overweight and obese, but it can be easily overcome by lifestyle choices”. So there....genes don't make you fat.....pies do!
I have noticed that the only people who try and prove otherwise tend to be overweight themselves. Calling someone fat when they are fat....well that's just the truth....cant handle that then do something about it or man up and take the comments.

I think we can all rant at horse riders on the road, just came back from getting the car MOT'd and there is a steep hill there is one horse being riden up it,now the pavement up this hill is never used, mainly because there is nothing to go to ,only the A120 road, plain common sense would be for the rider to use that pavement, it would be safer if nothing else, but no she took a slow amble up the hill and then turned into a field, result about 30 cars held up,even on the other side coming down hill ,there was a learner who just stopped,of course not the fault of the horse rider but it all added to the complete standstill of the road both ways.

An ill informed opinion I'm afraid. Read some proper white papers on the subject and then have another think. However, again as said, this isn't a discussion about WHY people are fat.

One controversial remark followed by a like response is hardly evidence which "confirms the sorry state of society"

That is a ridiculous and simplistic conclusion to draw from a single event.

I'm not drawing the conclusion from this one event, I'm using it as an example which I thought was reasonably obvious.

I'll leave you all to play now - I think I've tried to make my point enough but I'm in the minority with what I think as everybody else seems to think that swearing at and insulting someone is an appropriate response to a snidey remark. I don't, I prefer to let it wash over me and continue to enjoy my life or attempt to start an intelligent discussion. This woman would not appear to be receptive to an intelligent conversation so in my mind no action needed, certainly not action that brings a woman to tears.

If not from this example then what.?

You are the one conflating this thread with the general decline in society but when challenged choose to ignore it.

The circumstances that lead to this thread in the first place are understandable and also regrettable but by no means proof of your assertion.

Your arrogant "I'll leave you all to play now" comment shows you up for someone with an arrogant and superior attitude although rather lacking in the intellectual ability to debate unless people are in agreement with you.

I think you are another prime candidate for the ignore list.

You are not wrong.

The 2 camps are never going to agree on this.

It would be nice to live in a blissful nirvana but he ho £hit happens.

Still doesn't change the fact that if this event had happened in a inner city she would have got stabbed. So my response was somewhat subdued all in all.

Because the general decline of society isn't the topic of this thread, I was just mentioning it generally because this situation I feel is a reasonably good example.

I didn't mean to come across as arrogant, I'm sorry you took it that way. It was just meant to be a lighthearted exit from the discussion. I'm more than happy to debate but this thread is going way off topic, partly because of me I realise and again my apologies to the OP, and I feel I've contributed all I can without continually repeating myself and going round in circles. If you want to translate my bowing out of the discussion as a 'superior attitude' then there's not much I can do about that. As the OP said the two sides aren't going to find common ground here and I think the discussion has run it's course, I don't feel I have anything useful to further contribute. Maybe if I get your back up so much then you should just put me on ignore, that's what I would do :)

Your original post made me p1$$ myself. Well done! I know it wasn't a nice situation, but the story was still funny.

One way to look at it is if someone didn't stand up to people who are arrogant, pompous, and rude like you did, then they'll just keep doing it. They need bringing down a peg or two, and a dose of reality.

Perhaps the elevated seating position gives riders the same kind of feeling of superiority that some SUV drivers seem to get from their high centre of gravity position (in an attempt to bring it back to cars and stir more sh1t).

I know how you feel about the dogs though... I'm intensely defensive of mine and have had several altercations (usually because some little turd dog has tried to attack my German shepherd!).

Based upon what has been written: The woman was wrong to call the OP an idiot. The OP was wrong to call the woman fat. The OP was wrong to prod the woman.

To those who say it’s OK to insult someone based upon their weight, is it also OK to insult someone based upon their race, religion, gender, or nationality?

To those who say it’s OK to prod someone’s leg, is it also OK to tickle, rub, slap, punch, kick, or touch someone on the leg or anywhere else on their body?

Social norms and definition of acceptable behaviour is set by what the general population believe, and I don’t believe any of the above are acceptable in 2022.

I wonder if it had been some burly big bloke on the horse that you would have felt brave enough to go and poke his leg?

I also wonder if you’d then got a kick in the teeth, (probably your face would be at an ideal height) that you’d post up your brave adventures in bullying!

Difficult to argue with this! But let's not forget words are just words and, although I'm not advocating any insults, we should have full freedom to insult people if we want. Otherwise how far do you go, no insults based on skin colour, hair colour clothing colour, pet colour, car colour... the boundaries shift and it's highly subjective what is offensive, that's the problem. We must retain the right to be offensive 😁

I said it before, due to the confrontational nature of my job, I am verbally abused on a daily basis and it's all water off a ducks back and never bite back.

But my anything about my Dogs, nooooo

If I may ask, why is your job confrontational?

Probably wouldn't have done the poking. But would have called him a .unt which I would not have said to a woman and if it all kicked off so be it.
