Formula 1, Moto GP, WSB, 2021 Season

So the ’overtaking under the safety car’ protest has been rejected.

Even under normal circumstances that would have been a harsh penalty given the jostling.

The real test is the handling of regulations. So let's see where that goes. If they let these shenanigans stand then that raises questions of ethos and integrity of F1 itself.

I agree, it would have been harsh to penalise Max for the ‘passing under safety car’ thing.

The problem with all of this began earlier in the season, (and indeed earlier in Max’s career). The stewards have simply not just applied the rules as written. They have tried to apply latitude (give an inch, might as well give a mile) and have done so on an inconsistent basis. In short, they have undermined the credibility of their own rule book and their own officials, to the point that everyone has lost respect for them. This has now resulted in the absurdity we’ve seen today.

Masi must go.

The FIA were hardly likely to uphold MB's protests and take away the title from Max.
To do that would be admitting they were wrong.

Basically the stewards manipulated the rules so that a one lap, two car shoot out could be held despite the fact one of the cars had a huge tyre advantage. It should be them that should explain that to the World not the law courts.
Make no mistake this’ll end up at the Court of Arbitration for Sport

So let it go to Paris and is it Geneva for the international court for sport - MB must win, there's no opinion other than that Masi boobed and gift wrapped the WDC to MV. MB decided not to pit LH and loose track position based on the regs, Masi moved the goalposts without justification under the regs, and its cost LH his 8th WDC.

If Masi does not resign, he should be fired for bringing the sport into disrepute.

We've had that implicit threat suggested for Ferrari over the years ....

My view is that if any major team wants to pull out for reasons of sporting petulance then it's not a long term loss to the sport.

If Red Bull pulled out they'd be forgotten quickly. That's the nature of things.
Except Ferrari are F1 and F1 is Ferrari.

Red Bull are a marketing company that don't even make anything, they sell a rebranded Korean drink under licence. F1 is purely marketing/advertising for them.

Very very different perspective.

They also need to block off the teams from lobbying the race director.
The race director (Masi) negotiating restart positions with a team (Red Bull last week) has been a new low for me. He allowed himself to be bullied into making the wrong decision today.

I have argued that Ferrari need F1 more than F1 needs Ferrari because F1 is even more important for marketing and brand image to Ferrari than any other team.
Ferrari get paid an appearance fee that none of the other teams recieve because their presence is so important to the Formula.

I actually thought that wasn't bad - on the basis that the option of giving back positions on track had been messed up by the red flag - and that this was a bit of pragmatism by the race director. The only concern really was the confusing nature of the start of the dialogue (or negotiation?).

He should make a decision and share that with teams. It should not be ‘my best offer’.

'so important to the Formula'.

F1 is fickle.

Some teams managed to make themselves influential - and the money flows are uneven across the paddock. (Not just Ferrari - but they seem to have been in a distinctly preferential situation). With Ferrari I think we have a self-sustaining argument: 'We are important to F1 because F1 thinks we are important to F1'.

I think the reality is that their dominance in terms of status within the sport and its finances will have been a deterrence to new entrants to the sport over the decades.

I get the feeling that none of this is new. In so much as it's been going on for decades. It's just now broadcast.

I'm not entirely sure broadcasting selected conversations between the teams and the RD has turned out to be a good thing.

So I wouldn't be surprised to find we simply don't hear this stuff going forward.

The teams need to be able to communicate with the RD it's a necessity. We don't need to hear it.
