Formula 1, Moto GP, WSB, 2021 Season

I read today that MERCEDES big wigs in Stuttgart have warned Toto to drop all appeals and stop embarrassing them
They say we have had 7 years of free promotions as being top dog now drop it and let it lie
I'll try and find the article and post it as they said it better than me

I'd read LH had said the same, drop it and move on.

The FIA 'investigation' will be due to rumblings from sponsors. Money talks very loudly..

I would suggest Stuttgart believe morally Mercedes have won the argument and further proceedings on their part would only detract from that.

I think LH worked out pretty quickly that getting the race result overturned would leave him with a diminished 8th championship.

I think it has sadly left MV with a diminished championship.

And the FIA 'investigation' sounds not unlike like any big organisation trying to deflect and dilute attention from a specific event or outcome by widening the scope across the organisation, activities, and time.

I wonder if the FIA is facing a very difficult position with Liberty F1 on this. I'm assuming it has some obligations to run the race in compliance with its regulations not just to the competitors - but also to the commercial rights holders and promoters. Arguably the failure to uphold the regulations is the equivalent of a breach of contract to all the major parties involved. Ordinarily the impact of that would be minor but in this case there is a disproportionate impact on the outcome of the championship and reputation.

I also wouldn't be surprised if behind the scenes MB haven't rattled the cage with some calls and strong words asking why they should continue to participate (and not just as one of the leading teams but also as the major engine supplier) given the procedural failure at Abu Dhabi.

And Sir LH has been rather quiet. It's not unreasonable to assume that he may well be re-considering his participation next year. At this time he has substantial value to the sport globally - and while nobody is irreplaceable the combination of the tarnishing of the WDC and the loss of Sir LH while still competitive would be damaging over the near term.

It does have a different way of looking at it , so do the fifty or so (mostly , almost all negative) comments posted below it.
Didn’t read the comments. Given the derisory slant aimed at Lewis and Toto, it’s unsurprising there are negative comments.

Having read through a good number of articles and everyone’s comments here on all of this over the last few days, I do think that Toto should drop it and move on. It’s just wasted energy that will achieve nothing positive.

To some extent, I agree - but why would any commercial organisation spend hundreds of millions annually to participate in a “competition” when the organisation(s) running the show are demonstrably capricious, and/or incompetent/corrupt?

I do believe that Toto will ultimately drop the appeal, but not without a significant quid pro quo.

I think the current ‘mess’ is damaging to the Mercedes’ brand.

I agree. Which is why I believe the appeal will be dropped, conditional upon some material action on behalf of the FIA being taken that we, as mere spectators, are unlikely to see in its entirety.

The reality is that through the actions of the FIA's official (the Race Director), this is a "no win" situation for everyone:
  • If (as it undoubtedly will) the Abu Dhabi result of MV winning the WDC stands, that title will forever be diminished in the eyes of many
  • If the Abu Dhabi result were to be overturned and LH crowned WDC instead, that title would be diminished in the eyes of many
  • If Mercedes continue with their appeal, they will be seen as "bad losers" by many
  • If Mercedes drop their appeal without some form of public recompense, they will be seen as "trying it on" by many
  • If the FIA obfuscate and do their usual "move on, nothing to see here" routine, they will lose the confidence of the teams, sponsors, fans, race promoters and the broadcast media
  • If the FIA hold their hands up, they will be seen as incompetent and lay themselves open to breach of contract claims
  • And so forth...
It's a horrible mess, and one that I'm very glad I have no responsibility for resolving.

One thing I did find mildly amusing is that Horner, who has spent the entire season whinging about how unfairly RBR and MV have been treated by Masi and the Stewards, is now saying that Masi is a good guy and he shouldn't be blamed for what happened. The irony and hypocrisy of that is staggering.

Agree with all of that.

I think the watching world sees Hamilton having been robbed of the WDC and if it could be awarded to him it would be no less valid than if the Sunday debacle had not occurred.

The reality is though that most people aren't bothered what happens now.

Ok you have driver fans who will bleat on about it but the general public won't be that interested now.
