Wouldn’t surprise me

No, not a chance.

The FIA sits on a huge amount of capital - but its actual operating turnover is disproportionately very small.

An organisation such as F1 could easily view it as (a) an irritation and (b) not very expensive to replace and (c) very expensive when it comes to the 2021 championship travesty.

Losing LH next year would probably cost F1 more in lost opportunity and goodwill than replacing the FIA.

There is no satisfactory solution to the mess created by Mr. Masi’s decision to go all ‘freestyle’ with the rules. The FIA need to put their house in order before the beginning of next season.

As long as we don’t end up with a big bulge under the FIA carpet…

I get the feeling that the FIA is only just waking up to the dire mess it has presided over, culminating in this season's shenanigans in F1, but rooted much deeper.

As I mentioned a few posts back, F1 very nearly broke away in 2009 and it was only due to Bernie's "largesse" (bribing Ferrari and others to stay with buckets of cash) that stopped it.

I don't think lack of money or talent would be an issue for F1, but I do think the one difficulty they would have in breaking away is how to set up a plausibly independent rules administrator.

One option post enquiry /appeal would have been to declare the entire race result " null and void" due to a misinterpretation of the rules. This would still have meant Max VERSTAPPEN winning the championship by dint of more race wins but have been within the spirit of the rules rather than MV "winning" the last race which patently he did not.

Only if the WDC was awarded jointly to LH and MV.
Otherwise, MV's one victory more is pretty hollow when LH was away to match that and lead on points.

I think the FIA missed its get-out-of-jail-free card when it failed to penalise MV for his drawing level with and slightly ahead of LH waiting for LH to bolt when the SC came in. A time penalty relegating to him to second place would have rectified the WDC position and while not ideal invoking the 'no overtaking after SC until lead driver bolts' given that MV didn't fully overtake (but did put his nose ahead) he did by being adjacent to LH impinge on LH's ability to warm his tyres in the usual manner in preparation of officially restarting. Not ideal, but the watching world would have understood why.

A superb insight into the staggering depth of feeling generated by this truly enormous debacle. Toto really is the consummate professional and his carefully worded replies portray a deeply thoughtful man of obvious intellect and passion.
His defence of Lewis is obvious as is his compassion towards a personal friend who like himself has had their world destroyed in minutes.
Lewis would seem to be contemplating retirement from what I’ve read this morning. Could well be just another hack story, let’s hope that’s not the reality as that really would be a bitter end to a magnificent and record breaking career.

Good point.

My feeling was that this would definitely be a risk - Mercedes have a strong legal case in terms of arguing the race was run incorrectlty - but when faced with sorting out a remedy the FIA backed by RBR would probably just turn round and argue the race should be voided.

That’s spot on. The regulator of any F1 series must been seen as independent and without commercial or financial interests in the results. The FIA can supply this as long as none of its members go maverick.
I’m quite sure this will be addressed.

Big job ahead for this guy

Best of luck with that poisoned chalice.

Best of luck with that poisoned chalice.
Actually, it probably makes it easier to make significant changes as he can always blame identified deficiencies on his predecessor, and take “tough” corrective actions.

I see it more like picking the pieces of a finished 5000 jigsaw up off the floor after some silly bugger deliberately knocked it off the table.
Next years first race will be a doozie.

So the new chief comes from a country that shouldn't in my opinion even have an F1 Race.
Which countries do you think should have one?
