Formula One 2018 - General Thread

In 1993 amid running Toyota's Le Mans efforts, I was also Will Hoy's race engineer in BTCC.
Leading two cars in the British GP support race....and then this happens......how pleased was I?

Good ol' Murray: " & Crash Bang Wallop Hoy's off"

The car upside down is a Toyota :). Classic Murray
Yes, good ol’ Muddly Talker brought many fans to motorsport on 2 and 4 wheels with his infectious enthusiasm. Hard to belive he did it all in his spare time and retirement!

Blinding qualifying lap from LH today for the Spanish GP.
Its an all Mercedes front row too:banana:

Good result for LH. I'll be keeping an eye on Alonso.
I wonder if Williams are regretting their driver line up this year?

I wonder if Williams are regretting their driver line up this year?

I bet the drivers are wondering what the hell car they have been given for this season. Quite frankly its diabolical and even LH would struggle to improve the times.

Good result for Bottas too. Only 4 hundredths slower than LH.

Well that was a screw up by Ferrari. No idea why they called Vettel in, I think the story about them not being able to make it to the end was a cover up. Well done to LH, an easy victory. GRO seemed to have rolled back the years with that crash!

Bad luck for Ferrari especially KR with the engine failure. Good result for Mercedes and LH fans and a good result for MV despite running into the back of Strolls Williams - what was that about? DR needs to up his game to keep him in check. Unsure if Grosjean deserved the next race grid penalty - if it was a Ferrari I'm sure it would have been waived, although you can see why he spun but why he kept his foot on the loud peddle was odd. Good to see Alonso in the the top 10 again.

Some of the drivers said this weekends track was difficult to overtake. The next race has to be the most boring on the calendar for overtaking. I know it is for spectating when I last went there. Maybe throw in the two RB's upfront and both HAAS amongst the Merc and Ferraris to change the normal front running order and definitely some RAIN to take the blandness of Monaco away.

Grosjean once again demonstrated that he just doesn't have the brain-power to function as a formula one racing driver. Time for him to go, there must be some more talented and deserving driver(s) out there for the Haas team.

Lewis and MB were in a different league on Sunday. However given the pace of the Red Bull boys, that may not last. The spin by Danny under the VSC didn't help his cause much. Also setting lap records in the closing stages is a bit of a wind up for the team, where was that pace during the rest of the race?

Ferrari, having gained under the virtual safety car in Melbourne, tried the same trick again. Didn't work. As for the engine/powertrain issues, that's unfortunate and I hope they get them sorted asap.

Overall, a pretty dull processional race.

Well, we ran our Classic Formula Ford at a 'one off' this year at Silverstone yesterday.
Started P32 after an exhaust issue in race 1 and went on to win... .Averaged 7 overtakes per lap (!) in the first 3 laps and drafted in to the lead on lap 4.
Was it F1? Nah!
Was it fun? Not 'arf!

You had God on your side of course...and front.

Sad thing is that RG has shown signs of fastness - at various times - but his speed and his decision making seem quite mercurial and they come and (perhaps mainly) go.

Oh he's a quick driver and on a test he'd add value and maybe in WEC for example he could be successful. But in the pressure cooker of F1 he just doesn't have the smarts IMHO. Pretty much all of the most successful F1 drivers have been very quick AND very intelligent. Not all of them of course.

I can think of a certain former Lotus driver that went on to (eventually) find success in another team (due in no small part to ending up in a superior car), who may not be universally thought of as being the sharpest knife in the drawer. He could pedal though.

I honestly thought Grosjean would be watching the next race from the garage following his visit to the headmaster's office.

On what planet is driving across the track doing doughnuts through the pack, never mind making enough smoke to hide a battleship, a good idea?

Better from Verstappen this time, just the one completely avoidable crash.

Not big, not clever. He rather reminds me of one of my French drivers one Jean Marc Gounon.
At Le Mans in '97 he was simply brilliant, winning the GT Class and finishing just 1 lap down on the overall prototype winner and 2nd overall.
Later that same year he performed a 'Grosjean' on the very first lap on the Spa 1000kms in incident that took out all three of the Gulf Mclaren cars in one hit. Could it get any worse? Well yes!
When one of the cars was being recovered, the hydraulics failed on a rescue truck bringing the jib down through the very expensive engine bay of a Mclaren F1and covering everything with nasty fluid. The good news was the cars were insured, but we had to separate the damage caused by the accident and that caused by the crane on the rescue truck. It was a very late night!
The problem with drivers like that is you never really know which one is going to turn up on any given morning.
Like many things in motorsport there is a very fine line between hero and zero.
