Formula One 2018 - General Thread

Great race, i loved it. I don't understand why the teams that let their drivers race don't make them let the faster car through, they can still race to that point and would cause less own goals. Not that i mind as a viewer though.

The difference between MV and Kvyatt is tha Max is actually talented albeit at times over aggressive. Kvyatt was just well funded and clumsy.

The difference between MV and DK is that Red Bull now have MV senior stropping around the garage like some has-been clinger-on that thinks his sprog is some racing prodigy...

there should be at least one point for pole

In the last few years we've seen the situation where cars that are on pole have a had an aerodynamic advantage in the race due to the advantage of 'clean air'.

Giving an extra point for pole when the aerodynamics give this big advantage to the pole sitter already doesn't seem top be a way to make things fairer - quite the opposite.

Set the grid in reverse to qualifying...
Plenty of overtaking, excitement and .... carnage!

Like BTCC? No! :D
I hate what they've done with BTCC. It just doesn't make sense that you try your hardest to be the fastest and for that privilege they weigh you down with ballast to make you slower AND then they rotate the grid around by getting someone to pull out a bingo ball for grid changes. Touring car racing was awesome with the RS500's, M3's, etc with the Birmingham street race one of the best - youtube it. BTCC went to the dogs with corporate sponsorship just like F1 and these new brain storming rules and regs suck a long one.

But BTCC races are far more exciting to watch, they are certainly not processional unlike so many F1 races these days.

Or how about letting practice continue as it is, abandon qualifying, and set grid positions as the opposite of the finishing places in the previous race?

F1's rules have ended up looking non-sensical. Changes to save costs that make them astronomical. Changes to aero that kae gthings even worse for overtaking. Restrictions on testing combined with penalties for parts changes that mean a team that starts a season behind will find it hard to catch up.

I think the BTCC setup works rather better. Whether we'd be happy with a ballast handicapping system and grid reversal in F1 is a different matter. But I doubt it would be any worse - and might open the field a bit for the middle ranking teams to compete better. (It might also help if Ferrari and other legacy teams with special status didn't get preferential treatment as well).

If they want to reduce costs and at least appear to care about the environment they could reduce their obscene tyre usage. How much does it cost, and how much pollution is produced, manufacturing and transporting the current number they get through every weekend?

Give them two sets per session and two for the race, pit stops optional.

It's as if any new rules are not fully thought through but lets face it they are up against the ingenuity of F1 designers who will come up with remarkable ways to take advantage of whatever the rules do allow. Remember extremes like the Brabham fan car and the 6 wheel Tyrrell. What we need is simplicity. And I think they need to decide if it's supposed to be a spectacle or a motor race. Lots of pitstops were invented for the TV audience. If you are actually spectating at the race and not opposite the pits, they are very confusing. I'd go back to less tyre choice and fewer sets that would make them run more durable tyres that could be pushed for the whole race. Basically back how it used to be. Personally I'd also return to simpler naturally aspirate engines if that was commercially possible. They always sounded better than the turbos. The changes for 2019 at least seem a step in the right direction with simpler front wings.

It's interesting that Motogp having quickly banned winglets are now seeing the fairings evolve to do the same job of providing down force. There does seem to be a determination to tighten up the rules and keep the costs down though.

BTCC is glorified banger car racing. Compared to decent single seater racing, touring cars look so pedestrian. Not my cup of tea really.

How many times do we see someone just lob one up the inside and rub door handles or simply go up the back of the guy in front and tap them off the course? Can't allow any of that in an open wheel formula, unless we're happy to see people getting injured or killed.

Among the reasons touring cars is a close racing formula are; lack of aero derived downforce so no huge grip penalty for slipstreaming the car in front, ballast handicapping, enclosed wheels, no pit stops, much much lower budgets so less development options, simpler technology... Doesn't much resemble the world if F1.

I stopped watching BTCC decades ago when deliberate barging and punting off became the primary method to get on the podium. As GeeJayW says, that's no more than banger racing.

In 1993 amid running Toyota's Le Mans efforts, I was also Will Hoy's race engineer in BTCC.
Leading two cars in the British GP support race....and then this happens......how pleased was I?

They were great races

Interested to know you were behind the scenes.

Blue air i take it......

I'm sure there would be a way to game the system if the grids were reversed, or if your finishing place in the preceding race determined you starting position in the next race. Could it be possible to deliberately finish in a certain position in order to get a better starting position in e.g. Monaco? Same issue they had with having to keep the Q3 tyres on for the race a couple of years ago - Force India (it was usually them) would rather keep a fresh set and start 10th
