Formula One 2018 - General Thread

SV was the main culprit in the first incident. He's done that in the past - cutting in too early when completing a pass.
I'm inclined to agree, but Valteri's tyres were shot. Given the loss of rear end in turn one, he was never going to be properly alongside into turn two so should have conceded the corner a bit earlier. Similarly with DR, hanging on in vain was always going to end in tears.

Interesting though that Bottas received a 10 sec penalty for an incident that didn't penalise the other driver's result (DR) where as Vettel recently got 5 seconds for ruining Bottas's race

In these racing incidents the driver making the pass has to make 2 assessments. 1. on his own driving capabilities and that of his car--- 2. the driving capabilities/attitude of who he is passing and those of his car.
While 1. undoubtedly looms large in the mind of the passer I'm not sure 2. does to the same extent.
In retrospect Vettels passing manoeuvre was a high risk strategy in that both cars could have ended up as DNFs. Perhaps it may cause both drivers to "recalibrate" their Bottas passing strategy now to a level comparable to Max Verstappen! DEFCON 1 ;)

Looking at the replays I was surprised Vettel wasn't penalised for chopping across Bottas's bows, especially seeing SV was well aware VB's tyres were shot and therefore he couldn't stop or turn to the same degree.

For me Bottas did nothing wrong an drove a good race. It's one thing for Alonso to gracefully let the faster cars past but he wasn't fighting for a podium. Vettel should have been penalised for his overtake because he cut in leaving no room for Bottas. The Ricciardo overtake was a racing incident and Daniel should have realised that Bottas had less grip them him and given him more room.

After seeing the highlights of the race yesterday evening, I'd put the 1st incident with VB down to Vettel causing it. SV was way off the racing line and probably frustrated having been held up for so long and simply never gave him enough room. On the 2nd incident DR said after the race he was aware that he knew VB had some car damage as his team told him, so as far as I'm concerned he helped to create this one, although VB locking up on old/worn tyres didn't help but equally it was something DR would have been aware of so a racing incident.

I'd imagine Red Bull are looking forward to putting a close to the Renault engine chapter judging by there comments which is hardly a surprise.

The next race is one of my favourite circuits of the year and I'm really looking forward to it. Nearly every year I've attended it has chucked it down.

And yet in April of this year----?
Valtteri Bottas seen as 'bit of a soft touch', says Jolyon Palmer
he wrote the following
"I feel Bottas has the reverse effect in F1 at the moment," he added. "Yes, he's had a few scrapes, most notably with countryman Kimi Raikkonen.
"But he's seen as something of a soft touch in wheel-to-wheel fighting. Drivers are throwing moves down the inside of him that they wouldn't try on Hamilton.
"They know Bottas would rather let them through than risk a crash.
"Bottas is an incredibly talented driver. But if he is to really take the fight to those around him, I feel he needs a bit more bite in the heat of battle."

Jolyon Palmer.... 'nuff said.

Whilst I understand that Jolyon may not have been the most successful driver in F1 history, he is certainly not lacking in grey cells (I've engineered him) or current F1 experience.
That makes him massively more qualified than most armchair critics to bring some sense of understanding to the intensity of the battles in an F1 race.
You may not like what he writes (sorry dictates...) but I think he gives a good insight as to how the F1 drivers see things.
Oh! And he does say VB has found some more bite since early season, but just overshot a bit at the end of this last race!

Keys mixed up in a bowl wouldn't work these days where everything is custom made for each driver. It would be good if they could though.

Great result again for Lewis this weekend just gone.

Well, I've not been as close to Jolyon as you clearly have, so can only comment from the comfort of my armchair. With regards to his comments on VB; in one article he's essentially saying VB needs to grow a pair, in the next VB is too aggressive and on the brink of causing huge controversy (by nearly taking out SV, even though SV was at least partially to blame). Not an especially consistent view from a former driver that had a less than stellar F1 career, who at times chose to publicly criticise and undermine his own team. So maybe a few more grey cells needed after all.

Yep, all valid points. However, when a predominantly flat line Finn turns into the Incredible Hulk at the end of the last race, some might see that as worthy of different comment.
We can also see from Jolyon's 'experiences' that he has suffered some the same frustrations in the pressure cooker of F1.
Experience brings new understanding and we should never stop learning. Or as they say in the pit lane, 'every day is a school day'

Wow! Computer games have come on a bit eh???
Sure have. Pretty grunty machine to run them too, though I guess a PS4 might do. I've gift a couple of driving sims on my PS3, but that's getting rather long in the tooth now I guess.

Just seen that - WOW
