Formula One 2018 - General Thread

From the TV footage that I saw Seb had all four wheels off the track on a couple of occasions, but no mention of a time being disallowed.

Before any race, the race director sits down with the drivers and outlines the laws of that particular track. There was no penalty or exceeding track limits at Monza as they feel there is no advantage to be had.

If there's no advantage why do it? The only reason I can think of is they can exit the corner going faster than if there was an Armco barrier there, therefore they gain an advantage.

Yep! Lewis really had to work for that one:)

Shock! Horror! An entertaining F1 race! Whatever next?

Verstappen once again demonstrated a fatal lack of maturity that cost him two places when it could have cost him one if he’d used his head and let Bottas past. Fool.

But he may just get a thank you from Vettel who minimised the deficit to Lewis with a 4th instead of 5th.....

I've not seen the race, was listening on 5-Live whilst travelling on the M62. Sounds like Lewis drove a stormer and Max needs a period on the naughty step having first had his mouth washed out with soap!

Everyone banging on about how good certain other drivers are, but even in a widely acknowledged faster red car, were unable to get the job done on home soil again.

I assume that the winner of the race and his team mate were warmly and respectfully received on the podium by the unbiased passionate Tifosi... On the other hand, maybe not.

FWIW, I would like to have seen Kimi win the race.

Track limits are track limits, there should be a consistent rule covering all races. The track is defined as part of a particular circuit, not something that should be re-arranged to suit a driver because he feels he want's to go a different route. White line is the edge of the track, all wheels over it... penalty, lets have some consistency, they are rigorous about engines and gearboxes.

Funnily enough I said to my wife just before the start that my ideal outcome would have been Kimi to win, Hamilton second, Bottas third. In the end Kimi ran out of tyres because Ferrari pitted him early to defend against Hamilton getting the undercut.

Verstappen is in danger of being the man who never quite made it, as a result of his own arrogance. He very clearly defended the inside line but then squeezed Bottas off the outside of the track under braking. How many times does he have to be penalised before the penny drops?

Verstappen was just silly IMO. He knew he would have been overtaken by Bottas so virtually pushed him off the track. It then gets worse when he threw away 4th place because of arrogance. Max had already been given a warning by Charlie and it proves he needs a better race craft or as said above he may be the best driver to never win a championship.

LH earned that win but I was sorry to see KR lose it. Win in a Ferrari at Monza for him .... much as I'd like LH to safely get WDC number 5 .... on this day if the won had gone to KR then I'd raise a glass to that.

As for MV ....... they should have dealt with him on the braking zone shenanigans a long time ago - he'd be a better race driver for it. Instead he remains a brilliantly fast but flawed driver - who might well cause an accident that ends up with one or more drivers injured.

I agree with all of the above. It was a good race and a great result for LH. Max really needs to grow as he acts like he's racing on Playstation 4. He's just too aggressive and that will be his downfall - he expects everyone to either move out of his way or to be held up while not using any talent to do so. Just by brute force and ignorance - not a marque of good racer and his previous race DNF's show this. SV done well to get to 4th although if he didn't take himself out on the first lap I think LH may have struggled to pass him. That Ferrari looks quick.

I'm glad the Monza fans were disappointed :D

DR must be going out of his mind been in a car that hasn't finished in what? The last 4 events?

I'd like LH to win the drivers title this year along with seeing KR win at least two races before the end of the season. I've always been a fan of KR and his lengthy and detailed colourful interviews after each race  :) Kimi for President :D

I forgot to say well done to Bottas for his role in helping LH win the race. True sportsmanship from him and good result been 3rd.

I know it's allegedly a team sport out on the track - but I'm not happy watching a team use their second driver - to the detriment of his own race - to affect the race of a driver who is actually competing with their first driver.

I didn't like it when Ferrari employed the tactics using Eddie Irvine and I don't like LH getting a similar benefit with VB.

I agree ^^ and Mercedes were lucky it didn't ruin Bottas' race although if they had run a strategy to benefit him, he may have passed Verstappen anyway. One thing I couldn't understand is why, with fresher tyres, Bottas couldn't get past Verstappen even with DRS? Maybe he wasn't allowed to use Strat 11 aka party mode but surely with DRS and a big tow it should have been easy?? My only conclusion was that he was too cautious as he knew Max would cut him off and possibly cause a collision.

Question for the F! rule gurus. Does the formation lap count as a race lap?

I'm thinking along the lines of a car which would normally be at the front of the grid is starting near the back, does the formation lap then pits, changes tyre compound and starts from the pit lane having completed the compulsory pit stop. Would this be legal, notwithstanding the desirability of doing the race distance on one set of tyres?
