Formula One 2018 - General Thread

I agree that there is no doubt he is a fast driver however I don't see him as a future world champion just yet. He was lucky to be bumped up to RBR and has Kvyat to thank for that. He has given himself a reputation where other drivers now think 'oh damn here comes the crash guy' so they either yield or give him ore space than he ever would.

His wheel to wheel racing and race craft is not one of a world champion yet but he is in a good position as an effective no.1, bit like like Seb was a few years back. I hope Gasly gives him a run for his money.

If Kvyat had as much driving ability and intelligence as the financial backing he receives, he would be right up there. As it is Max could run rings around him and RBR were totally right in promoting Max before another major team stepped in to temp him away. There's no doubt Max can really pedal, but it takes much more than that to become a fully successful champion F1 driver. If Max has the required headspace, he may still mature into a great driver.

I wonder how long before he is called up for his sarcastic remarks? His latest was that he tried to rejoin the track rather than cut the corner 'but next time I know what to do I will just cut the corner'. How about concede to the fact you made a mistake, give the place up and rejoin safely?

Yes. Showing his arrogance when he said that. What was Kimi meant to do/say? “After you Sir...” whilst braking and letting Max back on Track.

He should have got off the brakes, opened the steering and rejoined track in a more controlled way. He shouldn't need anyone to explain this stuff to him after the event, he should know what the right thing is.

He has always been a bit fragile though when the chips are down. Put him out in front in a fast car and he is very difficult to catch and pass, hence his championship wins with Red Bull. When he's needed to race for it, he makes errors.
SV is undoubtedly very quick, but there's always been a bit of a question mark over his capabilities - both mental and driving - when he's really pushed to the limit.

When he won the WDC's with Red Bull he had absolutely mastered control of the rear of that particular car (with the blown diffuser) and their strategy was always to push to the maximum off the line to ensure the second-place car wasn't within range and then control the pace from the front. Rarely did Seb have to engage in a full on wheel to wheel scrap with anyone, and when he did he often came off worst. His performance this season would suggest that the doubts that he loses control mentally when under extreme pressure are matched by reality. Overall it would be wrong to dismiss him as a driver - he's clearly capable of winning WDC's - but I've never thought of him as one of the greats, more a very quick driver in the right car at the right time.
Max needs to properly have his balls chewed by the stewards and by the RBR principles (like that's going to happen), so as to better understand that he should not be routinely making contact with the cars around him. There's no doubt he is a very fast and talented driver, but I really wonder if he is actually smart enough to become a true leg-end of the sport. He doesn't seem to understand that contact with others, genuinely risks the lives of himself and others and compromises his own chances in a race.
He has a huge amount of natural driving talent, but that's (currently) matched with a dangerous mixture of immaturity and arrogance. I really do hope that those deficiencies are corrected before he causes more than just busted carbon fibre and ruined races.

During his winning years, Seb's biggest overtake that came to mind was Multi-21

Wouldn't be surprised to see Ocon in a Williams next year. Would definitely help to benchmark Russell. On the other hand if Syrotkin stays put, Russell would have to be the quicker of the two to retain any credibility.

Nor would Claire Williams, according to this mornings news.

But. Williams seem to dither too much (Kubica last year) who is still in the Williams running list.

Although Sergey has funds Ocon has Toto Wolfe who can offer a good (free) engine deal for next year. I did think Kubica was their obvious choice after being very close to a drive this year but now he doesn't seem to be a favourite

It'll be interesting to see when and how he will be in the F1 circus although I'd imagine the media and fans will expect him to follow in his Fathers footsteps. That's some big shoes so I hope they give him a chance to be himself. Interesting all the same.

I'm sure I read somewhere that Vandorne is off to Formula E?

Yep he is off to Formula E along with a DTM champion racing for a team heavily backed by Mercedes.

Re Schumacher, he now qualifies for F1 but I'm glad they haven't rushed putting him there. Indeed he has big shoes to fill and the pressure can make him crack imo. Let him make his way up in time. If he did join this year it would be a bad move as there aren't any 'good' seats left and he could end up like uncle Ralf or Vandoorne

It is quite sad to see how Williams and McClaren are doing. They're still fighting each other, but sadly at the bottom

^^^ A strange one, that's for sure. Although we complain on the one hand that the same teams keep winning, and on the other hand that teams which used to win everything aren't winning.

With McLaren, a bad engine choice (and maybe the same again?) has definitely not helped but what about their aero development? Likewise, Williams have had a Mercedes engine but are so far behind the likes of Force India...where has it gone so terribly wrong?

...where has it gone so terribly wrong?

Aero. With the most powerful engine on the grid they could afford really aggressive aerodynamic downforce, they just don't have the personnel to design it. What you lose in the corners you can never make up on the straights and 'twas ever thus.

After a bit of an impulse decision I'm off to Austin for the weekend - haven't been to a race since Silverstone 2015 and not at Austin since 2012, so really looking forward to it. I think Hamilton will wrap up the title this weekend but fingers crossed for a good race. The weather forecast is variable with light rain on Saturday and 'sprinkles' on Sunday whatever that means. Oh and I think I'll give the Bruno Mars & Brittney Spears concerts a miss and search out proper music downtown
