Formula One 2018 - General Thread

Don't think so.

Too much emotion / passion with Mercedes and Ferrari teams at the moment.

And getting the WDC settled in the USA would have been a big event in itself.

I suspect that the organisers were slightly disappointed that LH didn't close it off this weekend.

That was offset for many of the fans (maybe not the wider public) by KR winning the race.
But think of all the, possibly significantly extra, advertising revenue the continuing 'battle' will generate..

That was a strange book. I would have much preferred that it had been proper biographical tome.
Ah! I'm talking of 'The Brawn Story' published in late 2009, not his FI strategy book

Impact in the US of the title being finalised would be worth more to the F1 marketeers I suspect.

Or was it always going to be this way, so the DWC would go on, possibly to the end of the season?
Wouldn't be the first time race strategies have be 'modified' to appease the sponsors ...

I doubt it. With the exception of 'Crashgate' my experience is that there has been very little 'match fixing' in motorsport. There are just too many other variables.

That result was always going to happen in my mind, the more they big up a result, the less likely it is to happen.
Great to see Kimi in what will very likely be his last ever win in an F1 car.
MV was outstanding.

Could this be the reason for Mercedes tyre problems in Austin?

The risk of a post-race protest from Ferrari prompted Mercedes to make modifications to its radical wheel rim design ahead of the United States Grand Prix, Autosport has learned.

As Mercedes seeks answers to its tyre temperature struggles in the Austin race, it has emerged that the team made last-minute tweaks to a rear wheel rim concept that had been under the spotlight ahead of the weekend.

The unique design of the Mercedes rim - which features internal holes to help blow air - has been viewed as one of the factors boosting the German manufacturer's recent run of victories.

Yes that's interesting ^^

Hopefully they can get them rubber stamped by the weekend.

Can someone who knows about these things explain how changing a water pump can cause a 50kg imbalance across the front of the car?

Mercedes needed to change the water pumps on both its cars ahead of the Austin race, which led to Hamilton's car having a significant weight imbalance across the front tyres.

Hamilton said after finishing only third from pole in the US GP he had faced multiple problems, and has now elaborated on the issue that was originally a mystery when he addressed the media post-race.

"They took the car apart in the morning, and when they put it back together, the car was unbalanced," said Hamilton.

"So [I had] a massive cross-weight issue. It was something like 50kgs, which was massive.

"So, the right front and the left rear would take all the weight, the car would not turn through the left hand corners.

I can't imaging an F1 water pump weighing more than 500g, so what's going on?

Unless it's diverting attention from the real reason, perhaps?

Car setup.

Change the suspension setup front or rear or keft and right and you move the crossweight by a small % of the car's weight.

So this sounds like they had a problem with the car on reassembly - maybe the rear suspension if that had to be dismantled to deal with the pump swap. They didn't get it setup properly.

Maybe a simple error recording the exact suspension setup before dismantling - or maybe something didn't go back together as expected.

That makes a lot of sense. Foolishly as it turned out, I assumed (always dangerous) they'd be quite good at taking it apart and putting it back together again by now.

Interesting shake up in the relative car performances in Mexico City, with the Renault powered cars to the fore!
The under used circuit with a very sparse support race program means the track is taking much longer to 'rubber in' and tyre management is difficult.

Whenever I've taken a car to this high altitude (low ambient pressure) circuit the engine boffins have always juggled the hot/cold size of the turbos to allow the car to produce more efficient boost. With the current F1 regs the engines are very much sealed packages and only 'digital' rather than physical tuning allowed. Does that mean the Renault engines are better optimised for this one high altitude circuit? Those driving Renault powered cars are at pains to tell you isn't as good at all other circuits! Why would you do this?

When you add in the fact that most teams are running Monaco spec downforce packs on the cars to gain any sort of aero grip, we should be in for a different weekend.
More normal service will be resumed as more rubber goes down, but currently the Red Bulls are looking very strong.
Just a pity the McLarens don't seem to be able get out of their own way on the straights....even in very thin air!

The Beeb's website says because the power loss at altitude is percentage based, the lower power engines lose less than the top ones so they end up with closer outputs.

Verstappen was fastest in final practice, Hamilton was 2nd - Qualifying takes place at 19:00 BST.
Hamilton will win his fifth world title if he finishes 7th or higher tomorrow

Max loses chance to become youngest ever pole sitter and is unlikely to do it at the last two races of the season.

Hamilton did well to get as close as he did to the Red Bulls and more importantly ahead of Seb.

Congratulations Daniel Ricciardo

Max had a face like smacked rse... Shame he lacked the grace to at least congratulate Danny.

He went up to Danny when he got out of the car and congratulate him. How sincere it would have been behind the helmet you don't know, but he did go straight to him in front of the camera.
