High fuel consumption w212 e350 cdi estate

Yep, that's why it's particularly upsetting when they get cranked tight instead of replacing the seal.

Id think most are broken trying to get the bloody thing on in the first place , the earlier one piece batwing was a right pita to fit .

If you don't pull the air boxes to the sides, yes. The new style doesn't need to. The turbo inlet mating should be reasonably effortless
 
To be clear, you have to dremel off the end of the bat wing to fit the silicon ‘repair’ kit…

I was refitting my 2012 batwing last night (-3°C).
I find even if I put a very thin smear of silicone grease on the turbo seal inner surface, it still requires a good push and wiggle whilst rotating to get it to slide all the way on. And this is made much easier by removing the air filters. If I leave the air filters bolted in-situ, it makes the job much harder and I also risk nipping/twisting the batwing-to-air filter oval seal.

I also put some folded up foil (about 30cm x 30cm folded down to 5cm x 10cm) under the turbo seal to try and catch the worst of any oil leaks when it's removed. I do this instead of the salmon tin mod that @W1ghty uses (invented!? to potentially give full credit).
 
Does engine temp play a big role here, i.e. if the engine is not on full temp the diesel consumption is higher?

I would think so!
I noticed last night after putting the cooling system together and whilst trying to bring the car up to temp to bleed the system, I just couldn't get it there whilst stationary on the drive. I managed to get to about 80-82°C after about 30 minutes, including a while holding revs at 1.5k, but I think it was just too cold outside. Mine will be fine whilst driving, but I'm just saying if there is an issue somewhere, getting the car up to temp over this past week would be even harder, with the resulting impact on fuel economy.

Yeah usually a smear of engine oil to aid pushing on.

If the plastic is not deformed and the seal is fresh, it doesn't really leak oil on the inlet port shutoff motor however.

Yeah but was before the ulez expansion, when I drove it every day. Now it's starting to rust... :(

...but still passes the smoke test at 0.1 without a DPF, while euro 6 DPF tolerance is around 0.5

167k miles and a lot of maintenance.

But the 250 4-cylinder cdi 651 I've just acquired has really impressed me with power and mpg.

I read the average mpg since reset it stated 1040 miles 46 mpg 34 mph. Are these figures acceptable for the 250 4-cylinder?

Not really had it on a longer run as yet but on the drive back from where purchased I did see a mpg of 51 I was sitting at about 65/70 mph. Really impressed with the 4-cylinder. I thought I would be a bit disappointed compared to the e320cdi I had previously but it's not been the case.

Last couple days has took a hit though. Monday I was getting 32/36 . Yesterday and today as low as 26. Must be the cold weather and short journeys I've been doing.

Mine is a mess from leaking, looking for a good used replacement
I have one that I rebuilt and have plans for, but you can borrow for testing and seeing if the DPF clears up before sinking in more money

Sounds ok, we get 40mpg average in our w205 c220d

Dpf values looked a lot less after check data with updated Launch

I sometimes get a bit better than that on the 350 CDI. You must have a leaden foot.

Maybe he has a short journey mpg insight he can share on the 220s?
