Hold Function on W212

There's no need to actually release the brake pedal.

If you brake normally to a halt you will naturally slightly lessen the brake pedal pressure just as the car comes to a stop. At that point, with the car stationery but without releasing the pedal, give it a quick further push and brake hold will activate.
This is my method too on a W212

ISTR the change at that time was away from the old SBC pump system to the new/current system.

So no HOLD on later 211's? Out of interest, what do I look for on the datacard?

I don't see why not.

The pre-faclift 211's (like the one I had) had SBC and it's version of Hold.

The pre-facelift 212 I have doesn't have SBC but has Hold.

I'd imagine the facelift 211 has similar tech to the early 212's like mine - it was something of a transition model.

IIRC there's nothing on the datacard. It's just a core function of how the car operates.

Got it to work, although there is a definite knack to it! Pressing the pedal as hard as I could after coming to a stop didn't work for me.

Instead, I brake as normal until the car comes to a stop, then quickly release the brake pedal and then gently press it again.

It's a little hit and miss though, so will take some finessing. The look of confusion from the car behind as my brake lights were flickering on and off.

If you're not quick enough, when you release the brake pedal before pressing it again to activate the hold feature, the car can creep / jerk forward.

The noise the brake pedal makes when doing the second tap is very un-Mercedes-Benz too.

Not quite sure why it needs to be the way it is, on my Skoda Kodiaq you just need to press the brake pedal a little harder after the car comes to a stop to activate 'Auto Hold'. There is also a button to turn the feature off completely if preferred. Seamless.

I'm sure I'll get used to it. Thanks for all the advice.

Do not need to release the brake at all after coming to a stop. As you come to the rest point after stopping just sharply and quickly press the brake further down, it will engage the hold.

Interesting - thanks. Will try it again when I am next out. I know it took a little while to master it on previous 211's, so maybe I'm just not catching it correctly?

I am assuming the fact I have an S211, not W211 makes no difference

Both my E Classes have been estates.

There is a knack to it but once you've mastered it it becomes second nature.

You're right guys, I played with it again this morning. No need to release the brake fully, or tap the pedal, its more like normal braking pressure, then slightly lighter braking pressure when stopped, then back to normal braking pressure, then release completely.

Well, I'll go t'foot of our stairs!

Yup, HOLD works. Think I'd assumed that the feature was part of SBC and as SBC was no longer part of the car did not really pursue it. So I don't have to worry about number of brake presses!
