Howto: Lubricate the windscreen wiper mechanism

the covers on my car (2000 clk) popped off easily in a matter of seconds....take care and you should be ok.

Just did mine. The set up is very similar on a W202, as far as removing the covers go. Mine had the central bar, and a guide bar either side of the central bar, which also I greased. It IS ESSENTIAL that once the small cover is removed, the wiper arm is unbolted via the allen bolt. Once this is done the two lower clips on the large cover (about twenty to, and twenty past) can easily be lifted and then the whole cover be slid upwards towards the top of the screen and removed to expose the workings. Don't just pull the large cover forwars once you have released the two lower clips as the circular cutout will snap as the previous post. Took 10mins in total.

Just went outside to do mine on the 200. It's a '93, with 16-valve engine but pre-facelift, and the wiper hub cover isn't plastic, it's alloy. Anyone know how to remove it?

I tried to remove mine and gave up as it wouldn't budge , but then I was trying to poke it in the lower holes with an allen key. If you know what I mean lol..

According to a thread on Mercedes Shop, the way to deal with the metal cover is to drill a hole in it, pump it full of suitable grease, and plug the hole with a self-tapper :)

Must try removing the cover on a 201 tomorrow when I'm at my local scrappy. Soooooo handy having a big one a few miles away!

This is only for the later w124's by the looks of it. I tried to have a go fixing a friends wiper today only to find i couldnt get the cover off. It looks like ill have to remove the mechanism to get the lid off.

I just want to thank everyone for this useful post. The missus has been moaning about screechy wiper and i thought it was just the blade . I put vinegar on it as the RAC sad . did not work. used WD 40 .That did not work.
I finally used this post to get out the plastic covers . second was a pain but after taking off the hexagonal screw, i flipped up the plastic cover. Slid it up the windscreen and gave it some serious automotive greasing with lithium based auto grease. took me all of 20mins as soon as i put everything back, the results were instant. no squeal , no screech no nothing.
Considering it costs bout £300-500 or more at the stealers , a tub of grease £3.00 and 20mins is a bargain.
Thanks all again.

Just done this to my wife's w202 because the wiper was starting to sieze up at the 12 o'clock position. Now it is as smooth as silk but unfortunatley my big builders hands broke the big plastic cover.Any got a price feom the dealers?
Thanks,Darrell.

They will probably charge you the price of the mechanism as they will be fuming that you did it yourself:D

I have the answer. I did my 1992 300TD yesterday. On this model, and I suspect many of the older models, THERE IS NO WAY THE LARGE BLACK PLASTIC LOOKING (actually aluminium) COVER WILL COME OFF (without breaking it) UNLESS YOU TAKE THE WHOLE MECHANISM OFF. It is held on with three allen bolts from underneath that are inaccessible until you take the assembly off. It is not difficult to remove the assembly (I took some pics and will post in the how to section when I have a moment (hopefully tomorrow))

Hey guys, many thanks for the tips. I have just greased the module and yes, it was all dried up. It only took me 20 mins to complete the job (could not have done it without you guys), and i have also made the gap like DEC so that future removal is made easy. I think it will only take me 5 mins next time to deal with it. Plus, a 1/2 pound of heavy grease cost HK$10 (about 2/3 of a UK Sterling) so, i am certain to make this a frequent maintainance. Cheers !!

Doesnt this seem like the best way for everone? Plastic or metal ( metal may get swarf inside the mechanism?)

Much better than breaking the covers etc!:)

When lubing the wiper mech. it's worth removing the arm and lubing the spring detent on the underside. That way when you raise it to fit a new wiper you can get it back down again..

In the 3rd and 4th picture in Nigel’s link, you can see 4 drain holes on the back of the hub, I think it would be possible to “drench” the area inside via the drain holes with spray grease via the straw attachment if the tip of the straw were curved round like a swans neck.

Drilling is a no, no, very unprofessional, in the back holes (no jokes please) would be a suitable method for the older mechanisms but for newer mechanisms, it is best to remove the plastic cover, looks impossible to those who haven’t done it but very easy to those who have.

The metal cover ones don't need lubing, they last forever on their own, I suspect drilling holes in them would lead to their premature demise.

The only ones that are a real problem are the 202s, even the 208 and 210 which are a similar design seem to last alright.

If you want to easily get that black plastic cover off, get a wire coat hanger, cut a piece off and make a small U shape at one end with a set of pliers.

Simply hook it up under the edge of one side of the plastic cover and pull gently sideways and up. This will lift the cover off the retaining tab.

Do the same on the other side and, off it comes.:D

Exactly as Desilva says, also a mirror is useful to locate the slot.
