Howto: Lubricate the windscreen wiper mechanism

What a wonderfully lucid and helpful thread . . .

My wiper mechanism is now greased and happy!

Thank you all

Just done both my MB's, one of the lugs broke off the small cover on my C220, otherwise ok. Didnt bother fully removing the large cover, just propped it upwards with a screwdriver. Both cars def needed doing, ungreased & dry inside.

Likewise mine was pretty dried up, it doesn't rain here between May and October, only the odd early Autumn shower so there is a tendency to forget the whole set up, only a few squirts and a wash wipe normally, and then you need it and mine was a congealed mess, surface temps of over 70 degrees C in the summer sun don't help either. I hadn't realised just how sluggish the mech was til I did the job, lovely now, thanks for the excellent thread.

can i ask how long it took you guys to do? im going to have to find some grease now o.0

Did mine yesterday as it had started to get noisy for the first 15 minutes of running, now nice and quiet also seems smoother.
Took 10 mins would have been quicker if i had read this thread before i started:doh:

Amongst other jobs pending, this was easy thanks to the thread. Just rust, parking sensor, rear seats and leaks to deal with now and I'll be happy I bought it!

The W201 has a metal casing that can not be opened easily, if at all, without breaking it.

The way i did it was to remove the motor and mechanism, underneath you will see four small holes, spray LOTS of white grease into these holes.

Mine was also getting very slow and there was no discernable difference between normal and fast speeds. But doing the above has cured mine and brough it back to life.

Also spray some on the shaft at the bottom of the wiper arm.

My W202 was doing that 'hesitating' thing quite badly and I thought it was the rubber strip of the wiperblade 'sticking' on the windscreen glass for some reason, so just kept using the wash/wipe function to help it ease across

This little fix took about 10mins in the freezing cold!

So (hopefully) I've saved an expensive trip to the mechanics, can use my windscreen wiper to see where I'm going and I feel good 'cos I can pretend "I worked on the car" today!

Thank you to those who so kindly share their knowledge :thumb:

My story: undid the hex bolt but couldn't get the mechanism off. No matter because the large cover unclipped easily. Couldn't get that off but no worries because I could see enough of the internals. Sprayed everything in sight (including large parts of the windscreen) with white grease. 10 minutes - instant improvement. Sounds much better - less squeaking, more whirring.

Top tip: when using the windscreen washer try to keep the door closed. You'll find that life's much cleaner and drier that way.

:)

Did my 124 yesterday in exactly the same way. The cover on mine is metal and despite removing the complete mechanism from the car and undoing the screw uderneath, the cover would still not come off. Quick phonecall to Olly @ PCS for some advice and a large squirting of spray grease in the small holes underneath and hey presto!:thumb:

Had a sticky arm so tried the above method. Spent an hour trying to get the bigger plastic cover off, then, found the part of the post where the image of the mirror and the use of the coat hanger were mentioned. Ten mins later two greased and cleaned wiper mechanism's. Even took the opportunity to re spray the plastics a nice shade of black !:D

A quick mention of Bardahl's Plastic and vinyl "lackspray". Turns out very well.:)

A big thanks to the previous members for this fix/maint step:thumb:

Thanks

Thanks for a great thread everyone. Just bought my first Merc and this is definitely a job I will do.

I managed to do it today, surprisingly very east to get the covers off - hope that isn't a sign that it is falling apart!!
Thanks again for the tip and look forward to more on the site..

Just did mine this morning too :thumb:

This has been on my "to do" list for a while. It all looks do-able. I look forward to not having a juddering wiper.

I'm useless and very impatient when it comes to puzzles - so I couldn't get the big cover off even after reading the excellent isntructions at the beginning of the thread.

I did get the small cover off, so applied some grease and worked it in by operating the wiper, which was instantly better. I then repeated twice moreand no problems since. This might help anybody else who is as useless as I am. I'm happy with spanners, better with a hammer but get defeated by bits of pastic.

Indy will do th ejob properly at next service.
