Internet security - Autotrader - all to read please

WHOIS lookup.

I know, as John says, that these things are posted with the best on intentions, but do you seriously think that car thieves trawl the internet on the off-chance that a postcode might appear next to a car that's on their shopping list?

no, I think they have alert software that does it for them

Probaly career scammers who have nothing better to do and spend all day spotting cars or plotting scams.
Unlikely but it can happen

I wouldn't get too hung about postcodes.

How many addresses share the same one. In a block of flats 10 may have the same postal code.

I always now use this post code

SW1A 2AA

Hope Gordon doesn't mind...:D

Does anyone know if it's true that the PM doesn't have a driver's license?

True, a post code can be the same for approx up to 50 or so addresses...;)

Well done,
That made me curious so I had a quick check for our Post Code...... 37 houses which is close enough.

Crockers

MI5 will now know that postcode came from the computer you used, and so you will be watched from now on.

Making mountains out of molehills in this thread, but internet security should always be taken seriously though.

Not sure if this was a "sarky" comment or not, but working for RM, I was just letting you know a postcode can be relevant for many addresses.....I certainly was not demeaning the nature of this topic. I will certainly be more careful, especially with things like facebook, ebay, and my User CP etc.:)

Are you not allowed to have a driving licence if you have one working eye ?

No idea. Ask your doctor?

Edit: Just googled it, apparently you can drive with only one good eye in the UK. I guess he has his reasons. As I said in my original post, I was only recalling something I 'once heard'

You can but Gordon has no sight at all in one eye and the other isn't too clever.

It's said that the fear of losing his sight altogether is possibly behind the increasingly acrimonious relations between him and Tony Blair, when Blair wouldn't move on fast enough.

Its wasn't meant to be so if it was seen that way then I apologise. I originally posted for folk not to worry as many addresses have the same postcode, as they do, as it would provide comfort and but also a postcode alone won't be used to pinch ID, but along with other info might be.

Hey W210

You need to watch out.

You include your website address of http://www.albioncranbourne.co.uk on the reply which actually links to your CV and your name. Lets say we call you David Kestrel.

Did a quick search on Nominet on your homepage which turned up with your company name, company number and address.

"Keep it secret, keep it safe"..

Guys, I have seen more and more recently people posting from Autotrader when comparing vehicles etc, most people do not realise they have just left their postcode on the internet as its used in the Autotrader search, in their information beside the post is what car they own, it doesnt take a rocket scientist thief to add the two together or worse steal you identity or something,

So please all be carefull.....

I have XX'd out the personal information here, but it is a matter of record that anyone can check at any time.

If you do not want this to be the case, you can contact nominet and have them mark the information as private. They can mark it for you such that all it will say is "data restricted".

To be precise for individuals it says:
"The registrant is a non-trading individual who has opted to have their address omitted from the WHOIS service."

Your domain registration company should give you this option when registering - but it may be easily missed/hidden deep in your account settings somewhere.
