Little daily driver with super fuel efficiency

SPX - I have decided to stop confusing people and leave the Landie for another time. That or an LWB G would be splendid for antique moving, as well as going to Waitrose

Buy a manual Discovery 3 base model with 18" wheels; you'll get 35mpg, with the rear seats down its bigger than a lot of SWB vans, you'll never get stuck in the mud/snow, the residuals on these are like no other 4x4; they hardly lose any money in relative terms, the bonnet is a good height for running over anyone at the supermarket that wants to give you a 600 psi punch, the list is endless.

It is a new building so all re-developed, can't say I saw Birds in GX, but pass them semi-regularly nowadays.

Charles did mention this. It looks like a half decent cheap motor. Clio diesel engine in some models.

£5995 price for Dacia Sandero - What Car?

Hell its brand new out of a box and a decent warranty.

But he's also ruled out buying new. Autocar did a feature a couple of weeks ago looking at what else you could buy used for the price of a new Sandero. Will have to dig it out.

It falls into interesting, and at that price, worth considering new.

Have a look at a Skoda Roomster.

You can buy a 58 plate 1.9 TDi with 53k miles for less than six grand.

That car covers every bit of criteria and then a few bonus points as well.

Makes sense certainly, but looking at it is quite painful.

I think I'd buy a £400 Micra and rent a Transit when needed

About 3 months - in Station Road. You park in the council car park opposite and Waitrose refund you. It's the closest supermarket to me which isn't in Slough..

Yes been there a few times, there's also Sainsburys in Uxbridge & Tesco in Yiewsley which should be relatively close by? I always try to avoid the Tesco in Slough.

Coming back on topic a Panda 4x4 sounds like a good plan.

I dont care what anyone says, Land Rover DEfenders, 90's etc are all just terrible cars to drive... I can understand off road and agricultural use, but apart from that they shouldnt be on the road..

Mine was an absolute hoot to drive, especially as it ran on full off road tyres.
I once got 80mph out of it and I'm sure it once touched 16mpg over a tank as well...though it wasn't normally that good.

Which engine Will? Compared to my Allard, driving a Landie is like piloting a Lotus Elise..

Mine was just a 2.25 petrol. I should have gone for a V8 as they can achieve 20mpg fairly readily, but do smash front differentials with regular monotony.

Watching a Disco rip the back axle off was an interesting experience, too.

Given this is a Merc site, does the collective have an opinion on the A class diesel in manual form - an example of what is available

The Duster provides all the above and with 4WD, decent space, and car not LandRover running costs. (I like that the front end reminds me of a Zagato Fulvia! - it's the lights that do it.)

I had a manual petrol on loan and hated with a passion the alloy gear knob (it was winter), but that was nothing compared to my contempt for the utterly mute steering. On greasy (or aren't they?) roads - the complete lack of feedback is a liability. That's not to say other FWDs are any better in this regard though.
