low mileage SL60

Hi John,

Thanks for the info. I have spoken to the guy and he appeared to be very genuine and told me of minor scrathes/stones chips etc. when I asked him about bodywork condition and he was keen for the car to be viewed at anytime. Only thing concerning me is the number of previous owners and fact that car is not a face lift - I would prefer a later face lift model but this car looks so stunning and could possibly be had at a bargain price but will be intersting to see what happens with the auction. I ahve to be honest though my other half is not keen on me getting it as earlier during year got the 645I cab BUT I will have to stand my ground on this one... :o

have you asked if it's a factory AMG or a conversion?

Good point... I was naieve not to ask and assumed that it was an OEM AMG - I will call him again (just got a litle bit too excited - sounds too good to be true if genuine though...) - thanks for the tip. I've got alot of research to do on 129 and if going ahead will have to take a MB tech with me and pay the costs involved etc. for piece of mind.

Its an OEM factory AMG BUT was built as an 500SL at the factory and then transported over to the AMG plant where engine was upgreaded and body kit/alloys were slapped on... It also says this on the ebay advert. Owner has confirmed this.

Does that make it a OEM AMG or a conversion? - I understand that this still happens to some modern MBs made not that long ago/still today? For example, BRABUS take OEM cars of the MB prodction line just liek AMG do and then ship them over to "transform/convert" them into BRABUS so I guess same principal applies...

that's how AMG cars were built before DC bought a stake in AMG. I think it's "legit"

Thanks form confirming the above guys. Sean, if u r near the area next week then i may possibly need u to inspect the car for me and if so I shall cover all ur expenses involved prior to myself making a trip down with a MB tech shoudl u giv eit the thumbs up. I shall PM u if going ahead with this.

All SL60s were made like that. The bumpers and skirts were missing from the 500, but other than that it was stock. The suspension, brakes, engine and dials etc all got replaced in Affalterbach. Higher volume AMG cars were made differently - almost fully completed in Bremen or Sindlefingen. I don't know about today.

edit - already mentioned above!

Hi Flash,
There are much wiser heads than mine giving you some excellent information. I have merely logged onto the RAC site and checked the registration number.

It comes back as an

SL500 Silver with 5 previous owners.

I am way out of my depth regarding the technical knowledge that has been mentioned, but if the conversion was done prior to importation, why on earth register the vehicle as something it is not?

Nick,
What was your SL60 registered as in the V5?

Sorry if I have confused anyone, but I would not be happy keeping my trap shut:

Manufacturer MERCEDES
Model SL500 AUTO
Body type CONVERTIBLE
Colour SILVER
Fuel type PETROL
Date manufactured 30 December 1996
Number of previous owners 5
Last owner change 29 April 2004

Fancy registering the vehicle on the 30th December??

Regards,
John

Cheers John, I'm quite cautious about this one and will have to do some THOUOUGH research before proceedign any further and wasting anyones time (especially C240Sport's time...). I have got vin/chassis details and will try contacing DC direct via C/S for some info in relation to this conversion etc. Ideally, I would like a late face lift model and initally was after a final edition R129 SL.

Amg was not part of MB in those days. The conversion was done after it left the factory. Dont take this as 100% confirmation, but i think all the early SL60's were registered as 500's.... but best to be sure...

This is true - I also wouldn't count the RACs information as gospel - it lists my car as an A class!

Also bear in mind that the VIN might come back as any old rubbish on the DC EPC, some C36s come back as C280 elegance (which is technically true), same goes for E36 (E280/320) and some 500E/E500 come back as E300 or something, whatever the base platform was. Before the production-line AMGs were made (like the C43, E55 etc) incomplete cars left the factory in different levels of assembly and the EPC was populated as such.

This doesn't mean the car isn't legit. If you really want to know the story, ring up AMG and ask them, I'm sure they could look up the VIN or the engine number and find out the build information.

Also don't worry about the AA or the DVLA, my Father bought a Morris Marina or something back in the 70s and he got the V5 back from Swansea with it's type listed as "3-wheeled-bulldozer" .

Totally, totally agree.

I am NOT in anyway saying the RAC is correct, I am merely passing on what it says. This car seems very nice, the RAC site is simply highlighting something I personally would visually check, plus we have Nick who can tell us first hand what his registration document showed the car as.

I would have thought the original owner would have purchased the vehicle as an SL60 AMG, the dealer in the UK would register it with whatever name, model, he wanted. My stretched limo was first shown as a pick-up truck, I merely returned the V5 and the DVLA issued a new one with the correct specification. That is what I would of thought would have happened IF the vehicle was documented as an SL500

There is absolutely NO way I am disagreeing with all the excellent, very informative advice that has been offered.

Good luck,
John
