Hi all,

I have recently purchased a '02' C230k coupe manual with 100k on the clock and on a cold start there is a slight crunch from 1st to 2nd. Once warm it isn't half as bad.

Any ideas what this could be, also if it's gear box oil what type of oil do I use and any helpful links to how to change it?

Thanks MB family.

The gearboxes are well known for being baulky first to second when cold.
Replacing the gearbox oil with Redline MTL cures it.

As Ted says an oil change will sort it they are notorious for this. However just to warn you even when new they are notchy when cold it's just a characteristic of the box.

I've just swapped my clk230k box for a Getrag race box and it's awesome

I had this problem on my CLK and swapped the oil for Redline MTL. It improved it but it's still notchy.

I bought the Redline MTL online and got a local garage to drop the gearbox oil. They only charged an hours labour so was under £100 all in.

Some GM boxes were well known for this issue when cold, they were slightly over filled at the factory @ 500ml not much but enough to drag the gears a little when cold.

Some improvement may be found changing the oil but make sure you stick to the correct amount as recommended.

Thanks guys - I will do the change and feedback once done :)
