The Osf Lower Ball joint was complete toast! I'd notice a crunch on full lock and this was the culprit!
Id bought a Tool of the Bay of Flea's for £22 which was a good buy, the old one was a nightmare to remove, pole on a pole and plenty of swearing.

Replacement went back in to bad certainly easier than removal.

I used Comline Replacements which are Oe Equivalent and are Guaranteed for 3yrs or 36,000 miles, We sell loads of Comline products and i do rate them highly. Just a crafty plug ;) lol

I was going todo the lower forward thrust arm's but found a bill not so far back of them being done at MB, So seeing as they were still in good condition i thought if there not broke don't fix them.

What was the difficulty with the lower joint Gav, pressing it out of the arm or splitting the taper joint?

I bought a hydraulic splitter when I last changed one - I had more trouble separating the joint, once I’d done that, pressing it out wasn’t too bad on mine!

Separating was easy, It was the share force need to press it out of the hub, It was enough to Break my Deep impact 1/2" to 3/8 Adaptor.

I bought one of these

The Trouble was im working on the Garage floor with axle stands, I had only just enough height/ground clearance to get that bit of kit in there with a Breaker bar and Poll on the end to Press the old Ball joint out.

Installation was alot easier but still required force.

I didn’t have too much trouble pressing the old joint out, done as you did at floor height which isn’t ideal but a 2ft breaker bar and using the same/similar tool to press the joint out and into the arm it was tough work to get it moving but once it started to move it wasn’t as bad as I’d expected.

I’d struggled initially to get the taper joint apart, so left it whilst I got a hydraulic splitter which literally pinged it out with no effort at all.

Hard work these old cars hey! :D

^ None of those open for me Gav.
Are you still using photobucket?

The car is looking great Gav. Excellent work:thumb:

Got to give mine a good seeing to tomorrow too although what I want to do is going to take around 3 days to do properly.

Who is hosting your pics?

facebook copy n paste which is why they disappear after a while dude :/

Thanks buddy

Yeah took me about 12hrs in total Finished off with Zymol Carbon.

Looking sharp Gav, real nice shine on the silver paint

Blooming Silver cars who would have them lol:D

I was never keen on them years back, then bought my silver CLK55 which I grew to love very quickly.

Not as rewarding as darker colours but a darn sight easier to keep clean and looks modern/fresh to me

Sometimes you don’t feel sure that lighter colours benefit from detailing as much, but once polished/waxed they really do look different :thumb:

Gav, I know the pain you went through on the lower ball joint.

Mine were a pain the in the butt to press out as well, as they were the original MB ball joints I assume that's why they so stuck in the hub. I used a generic eBay kit along with an 1/2" impact gun.

I did buy 2 ball joints from MB, however, only replaced 1 side to begin with. A few months down the line, the other side started to fail. So I would recommend to replace the other side.

Yeas bud i'll do the other side when that start creaking or play. Mine were the Originals too.

I’m pretty sure the one I changed on mine was original too, and lasted approx 15 years/150k. No creaking just had a bit of lift/excessive movement on the joint. The other side had been done by the previous owner about 5 years before hand.

These sorts of joints have always been hard work to press in and out, even on the older models. Satisfying when you get it moving though! :D :)

A little Job jobbed, Not by me this time,
