Update from the DVLA ref the Leaking fuel tanks on 211's

Mr Smith

The manufacturer has responded.

In your email you refer to an action in the USA. NHTSA determined fuel could seep through micro cracks particularly the high pressure pump/internal fuel filter module on higher performance models. It is probable small pockets of fuel build up, releasing a noticeable odour. NHTSA considered the leaks did not present an unreasonable risk to vehicle safety but the manufacturer instigated a worldwide service action to check components and conduct remedial actions as determined at the time of inspection. The manufacturer confirms this action was completed on your vehicle in 2008. This may have included removal of components but DVSA is unable to confirm what, if any were disturbed or what other components, such as piping or seals were replaced.

We are aware of warranty extensions in the USA and have progressed this with the manufacturer. The manufacturer advises this extension is only available in the USA due to significant technical differences between USA and ECE spec fuel/systems. The manufacturer also confirms they do not have record of complaints relating to similar leaks as described, in the UK. A search of our database has not revealed other instances either. As such we are unable to determine a specific defect.

I note your comment on a revised breather but we do not have specific evidence of this component failing.

Having reviewed the available evidence DVSA considers it is insufficient to support further action under the Code at this time and DVSA will not be taking further action on this occasion

However, I appreciate these components are ageing and have noted this for Market Surveillance and advised the manufacturer they must inform DVSA of any further instances.

If you believe the original actions under the campaign were not correctly completed you should contact the manufacturer direct for further advice.

Thank you for contacting DVSA.

Regards

Well Huston we have a problem lol, nsr outer cv gaiter has a split :( I was going to use the car for a trip to Cannock yesterday, ended up taking the wife’s Honda.

The upper control arm to hub bolt has seized in there can’t get enough acces to crack the bolt off , going to need a new arm too which is leading me to think perhaps I should replace all the rear arms whilst it’s all apart. Humm maybe a trip to Waterhouse again doh....

So turns out as I thought Mercedes don’t do a replacement boot.... £972 for a new driveshaft :wallbash:

Has anyone replaced the boot only? Or do I need to source a good 2nd had shaft? Just putting the feelers out. Seem mad to replace a perfectly good shaft for the sake of a boot:cool:

I've never done the boot only on a W211 but have on many other cars.

Febi do a nice boot kit with metal clips, 27730, not sure if that may do the job but you should be able to get one to check. ;)

I rang a very well regarded Specialist today and they advised that all the universal boots they’d tried struggled to stay on. Now me being me took the bull by the horns tonight and clean everything up and grabbed the part number off it’s actually made by revelle
It is 100% available from Mb approx £9.50 , so I’ve ordered it up.
I haven’t personally been working on cars due to personal reasons but I managed to get the seized top bolts apart , upper wishbone to hub side in preparation for either replacing the boot or a 2nd hand driveshaft. I’m currently posting via my phone so will up load pics and part numbers tomorrow.

Part number for the Outer CV Boot is a220 357 01 91 , which ive ordred along with 2x new Caliper to hub bolts as one put up abit of a fight lol:D

Good idea cleaning it and checking the part number as most parts do have a number on them.

The S*** just got real lol,

With the car now immobilised and with the top bolts off i thought id carry on...... Deep joy i hate working cars doh...

Abit of a piky aproach i know, But i wasnt going to build it all up to crack off the centre hub nut.... Obviously would have been a better idea to do this 1st lol.

Now i'm going to try and get a hub puller and press the shaft out, fingers crossed this works wish me luck.

Thanks Roger, If i cant get the shaft out i may have to resort in trying to separate the Join from the shaft replace the boot and reassemble, I hope they Circliped on and not pressed.

The shaft is out of the Diff so just floating around.

The Original Mechanic didn't want to take the Job making excuses about access etc, i just wish he had been honest, here i am working off the floor lol but now im this far i may aswel continue.

These can be a real pain the backside.

I've done same as you and forgot to loosen the hub nut before stripping down.
One of the guys at work made me an iron bar similar to yours to look the hub between 2 bolts, bolts have bent in the past so watch out for this.

I now remember and take the hub nut off first and a good wack on the driveshaft loosens this with the suspension still assembled.

Good luck Gav, hope you get this sorted soon.

Yeah cheers Pat lucky enough the previous bloke hadn't done it up that tight so it cracked off without issue, But yep i shoulda done that 1st lol.

I've borrowed this, so will have a play later, 8 ton apparently.....

I really don't want have to try and separate the joint from the shaft......

Can you stop giving me excuses to spend money lol :D

Just thinking you are that far in, I would always do the pulse ring (£12) just for the sake of it and then you think about the bearing (£42) and think what the hell may as well.
Beware cheap bearings, I always just buy OEM, you'd need new bolts for the bearing but Febi ones are available.

Motorparts is our business Pat so aware of the above, Tbh i've not seen a pluse ring like the one on the 55, all the ones ive seen have been toothed.
