Meet Silvia the s211 e55 7 seater

Oh I'm not sure I know that much, I just researched this gearbox extensively before rebuilding the one in my turbo. Really hope this cures your fault dude! :thumb:

And some more witchcraft continues, Valve body being cleaned out.

This is definitely best left to people who know what there doing, I wouldnt have had a chance....... i know my limits lol

I used to do this for a different manufacturer, stripping them down to their last bolts, cleaning, assessing the fault and repairing them. Nerve racking at first but when you've done a few, it's just like stripping anything else. A good knowledge of what is inside (tiny springs etc) and the torques/tolerances is vital though.

Great posts! It looks absolutely amazing what goes into these things and what magic happens once you select "D" if anything it makes you really appreciate things more.

I have a very rough knowledge of this kind thing but I'm always a great admirer of all things engineering related.

It'd be a great novelty to turn a broken one of those into a ball bearing maze like i used to get as a kid :)

Well She's Back!!

My friend at Mercedes Waterhouse Chelmford dropped the car back tome last night, So as you can imaging i didnt sleep that great wondering how it was going to perform 1st thing.....

Yeah they have sorted it lol, It's doesn't bounce your head off the head rests now on the change lol, had a nice smooth drive through town on the way to work, I gave it a quick go over with some detailing spray just to tidy it up as i left it sitting outside all night as was late.

He also printed off the History of the car for me.....

Yep it thicker than the Bible !! couldnt believe it!

So there she is, I really can't thank Waterhouse Chelmsford enough, Andrew the Service Manager kept me in contact throughout on all developments, and gave his honest appraisal on the situation and what in his view was the best way forward...
The work was undertaken very quickly once i had dropped the car off , it was also parked under covered when it wasn't being worked on which was nice.

They will certainly be working on the car again when needed, the price was also cheaper than they had initially quoted, i would defiantly highly recommend them.

Anyway i'm sure there will be more bits n pieces to do but in the mean time im just going to enjoy my e55 :)

Excellent news for you Gav (not so good news for your wallet). Now get out and go and enjoy your new acquistion! Good to hear positive garage experience for a change :)

Nice work Gav & glad it worked out. I'm guessing not too damaging on the wallet then.

Thanks for the thread, info & useful knowledge. Threads like this are good for all to learn a bit. Keep up the good work [emoji6]

Now that is a result! Always great when fixing something actually cures the fault.

Go enjoy your beast and by that I mean drive it as well as clean it lol

Great news. Perfect weather for a drive too. I'm a couple of miles from Waterhouse I'll be using them for any future maintenance.

Nice one Gav... enjoy it now!

Well i did say all i was going to do was just drive it.......

Lol So i rubbed down the front forward chasis rails as there was a spot of surface rust just starting, So i treated this, but then yep whilst the floor plastics were off this happened....:wallbash:

I did manage to have a family trip out today fully loaded with my 4 boys and my Daughter and wife, Ended up at Alton water for a family picnic, Car behaved itself from cold and drove spot on. It looked absolutely stunning today but i didn't get a pic as the wife would have complained that i love the car more than her lolol

Fantastic work. So glad the box is sorted and You are happy with it!

I look forward to the next update.

Cheers Vick, Just finding little jobs along the way, Just going to try and drive it this Summer then start of the winter i shall be having all the arch liners out and bumpers off having a clean up and waxoyling it all.

I absolutely love this car, And well now even more! The one thing Brutus my previous e55 had that spoilt me was the sweetest 5g gearbox i've known, it was nealy as smooth as a 7g, So you can imagine what it was like going from that to Silvia for the 1st time.

Having got the car back now from Merc's its changes have improved beyond comprehension from before, but there was the very slightest and im talkin .1% feeling of the change i could detect when it did from cold.

Also i failed to mention when i 1st got the car the Radiator top mounts, You know the 2x small pins that locate the Radiator into the top of the panel were loose! they hadn't completely come out but were partially out and unclipped.
I did clip these back in, so they were tight, very tight as they should be.
I got the car back from Waterhouse drove aprox 60 miles driving superbly as it was, Once home checking the levels i noticed the Radiator buffer were partially out again... Hummm........ I thought initially perhaps it was the engine mounts, so i checked these as i had before trying to rock the engine from side to side. NOTHING! tight as you like.

That left one thing in my mind, The Rear Gearbox mount! Id changed this on my other 2 211's i've had as a precaution! Well honestly ive never seen one in this sort of state!

2x 13mm hold this mount on the lower cross member, and 2x 16mm hold it to the gearbox with the use of a jack and piece of wood i had this mount changed within 15 mines so dead easy.
The Result the car is SPOT ON! gone any sort of hesitation, gone is all the snatchyness, You cant feel any gear changes!! this simply drives exactly like brutus's gearbox 100%!! i cannot believe how this along with the other work transformed this car! Im head over heals and tbf i do know my Mercs well, and i can tell even when the slightest thing is wrong. Silvia is like a new car. Anyway he is the replacement mount. Fitted perfect as usual and you can see the difference between old n new :thumb:

Just thought id share my findings, Hope you Peeps are enjoying this thread. I know im certainly enjoying the car :)

Love the thread Gav and I take my hat off to you Sir as I love the attention to detail. Most would live with the tiny niggle or not even not it was a fault but you found it and sorted it so the car is as it should be. :thumb:

Nice work, you put me to shame, I'll have to stop this work thing so I can get back onto the E55.

It's great though that there are so many people looking after these cars so meticulously. ^
