Mercedes W114 250 Coupe - help!

It's actually a very slight engine surge - the car is idling slightly below the fuel load it needs for the temperature (slightly lean). I need to set the fuel enrichment load for lower temperatures, which I hope to do today.

Not been feeling great for the last week or so, a really filthy head cold and resultant poor sleep, so I've been doing very little on this. The guys at Project Shop are de-bugging the car, lots of minor things to do. Duo valve leaks too much, the console is too far forward so getting into 1,3 and 5 is more difficult than it should be, power steering very noisy (steering geometry is all over the shop so a lot of load is being placed on the pump) and a number of similar issues.

Any progress Charles ?

Going up tomorrow, not been well and they've been stuck with a Mini on a ramp holding up mine.

Popped over to see Charles and his W114 at the Project Shop this afternoon. Must say that the car looks even better in the flesh than in the photo's. The paint and the interior are both superb and really do need to be seen to be appreciated :thumb:

It's nice to see a project like this where pragmatism is used to address problems rather than just slavishly recreating what rolled off the Stuttgart production line 40+ years ago. The result looks to be turning out to be a very usable classic that keeps to the spirit of the original, but with an eye on driveability today.

Of course, as always this sort of project makes no financial sense whatsoever, so all credit to Charles for seeing it through. Not far to go now, but enough to push the finish date into 2017 I fancy.

Thanks for showing me round Charles, and congratulations on what will end up a great car

Many thanks for swinging by Phil and for your positive comments. De-Snagging was in full flow, Billy working his way through all the remaining stuff. As salty season is not far from us, I doubt the car will see a public road before spring next year, but hopefully long before then any large wrinkles will be ironed out.

This evening's job is to resolve the water pump - the one on the car is leaking but has no part number on it. The correct replacement may well be the EPC one but another new one from a 250CE doesn't fit but I need to check the numbers on that. The joys of what happens when anciliaries come from more than one car!

Oh, and if anyone is around the Restoration Show at Stoneleigh this Sunday, Project Shop are hosting the live stage there, with many useful subjects being covered. Apart from Iwan, Billy, Dave and Simeon, the lovely Bron Burrell will have a session. Bron, an E63 driver, will be there with Puff, her London to Mexico rally Austin Maxi that she drove in that 16000 mile rally in 1970. She has become a good friend as Puff and Brunnhilde have shared the same workshop.

EPC WATER PUMP nos without chassis/engine number as follows
A1152001520 [A1152001820]
THEN
A1102000920 [A1102001720]
THEN
A1102001020 [A1102002020]

Second [] number refers to the corresponding bearing housing[ i.e. pump body] supplied as a reconditioned part.

more info on being reminded of vin/engine no thread search not working!

If its of any interest the first two pump nos are shared with other engines in a wide range vehicles cars vans trucks cross country vehicles. M114 ,M115 ,OM 615, OM616 ,OM617, M130, M180.
The last no seems to be associated with a slightly later group of engines [ in general?? ]
M108 M110 M114 M121 M130 M129 M130 OM621
Its a bit of a minefield this one !

Yep. One pump (newly fitted prior to scrapping) came from a 250CE but is too long for all the water pump pulley to line up with the front crank. Ditto one bought as a Hella 250CE pump, which is also too long. The one on the car is a bit too short but a specially made washer spaces it out. Unfortunately, that one started leaking when the car was running, and does not have a part number. I don't really want to order stuff in randomly either.

Right, I'll get measuring tomorrow (my pumps are buried, one off car is up at Bicester) - the above doesn't surprise, but certainly complicates life!

The SL shop think the water pump they have (1102002020) is the correct one, that will arrive next week.

A lot perkier today so I went up and fitted one of the sill trims, most snagging now done, Billy spent much of the day on interior fettling plus fitting the front bumper rubber.

Monday the car is off for its tracking and geometry to be done. I need to find all the settings by then.

The doors now have all their furniture minus the chrome door caps. Fittings have gone back as they were originally - no amount of fiddling will get all of them straight without exposing flaws in the door cards! (German build quality is a bit better nowadays). The flexiplastichrome trims are all a bit tired but can't currently find an adequate replacement.

Bumper rubbers on, as are sill chromes but those not pictured. We found the suspension settings in the Haynes manual for the Pagoda (which by coincidence covers the W114s) and a visual inspection shows cambers all over the place. Off to the geometry lot locally when the car has a water pump in.

SL Shop just called to say they have taken delivery of the water pump and when measured it seems to be the right length, so with luck and fingers crossed, that hopefully sorts that.

I'm impressed with their service - helpful and knowledgeable parts guy who did exactly what he said he would and the pricing is absolutely fine.

Fitted the waterpump and no spacer required, so that's three lengths of pump available for a M114.

The front mudflaps found in the car when it first came to me were also fitted. Nice old MB ones.

Abz John started clear waxoyl treatment of the arches and around the headlights. By amazing coincidence I found a set of original arch liners in Germany just yesterday, but better safe than sorry. We'll do another coat in these areas and on the underside.

Car is off for geometry on Monday.

That's a great project. I owned a J reg 250CE since 1993 until scrapped it a couple of years ago ....well a neighbor asked for as a parts car and I agreed as I'd not been back to the UK for 12 years and it just sat. I heard that even after sitting for 12 years, all he did was jump it and drive it across the street to his parking space.

I now live in the states and have an Italian spec 72 280CE. 4 speed manual car with a/c and the split rear bumper. It's been gathering dust for the last year while I work on other projects. Your efforts give me good motivation to get started. The W114 is truly my favorite MB.

Best wishes

Hi Al

A split bumper Italian coupe is a very pretty thing. Please do crack on (parts are pretty much still available) and being US / Italian it shouldn't be as rusty as mine! I started liking the W114 coupe looks, now I adore them. Look forward to seeing your progress and thanks for your best wishes!

I don't know. I've had a few W114 and i'm pretty sure they'd find a way to rust if you put them in the middle of the Sahara :). I'll subscribe for updates on this thread.
