Mercedes W114 250 Coupe - help!

I was going to upload a few photos to show the steering box and column now installed, but Photobucket is being totally un-responsive. Popped the heater matrix into A1 radiators, which very genial owner offered two observations about it - that it is extremely rare in this period to have dual circuits and how much bigger the beastie is than a contemporary matrix. It should be ready mid to end of this week.

Edit - engine bay with renewed steering, engine mounts, steering box and column re-attached. Finally, we have a steerable if not yet rolling chassis!

Next job they started today was renewing all the brake lines with copper.

Photobucket was giving me grief also - prompting a rhyming utterance and a move to e-mail.
Coupe is progressing nicely though. Soon, all the strewn everywhere parts will all occupy the one space again. The progress must be gratifying.

It is very gratifying. We are blitzing it in stages, with a couple of weeks break per stage planned to allow the next stages to be pulled together and stocked in case parts take their time.

However, no relief yet on parts - I am storing the unused body panels (wings, bonnet etc) until they are needed, plus all the bits taken off so I can flog 'em.

Looking very good and excellent progress!
What did you end up coating the underside with in the end after the POR 15 failed Charles?
I was planning on using electrox and then overcoating with an underseal of some kind, but a little concerned about it flaking like yours did now.
Thanks,
Sam

If it's the same as the 107 the axle shafts won't go back in with the brake calipers mounted. Although the diff mount is different to mine everything else looks the same. The back cover had to come off anyhow to get the circlips on. Good time to check axleshaft end float.

(Abz) John who has been applying it all has been off so when he gets back I'll give chapter and verse.

Charles

Where do you intend to mount the red underside led kit?

Looks great.

Not so good news today. The carpet fitting kit from KHM arrived (still no sign of the seats and carpets) and one of the pots of strong stinky glue had burst in transit, so half of the stuff inside is glued up. Thank heavens this wasn't in with the seats or carpets, but I now worry about the packaging for the important stuff.

Second, I have a completely different clutch master cylinder to the early cars and the later cars. So the genuine ATE clutch master cylinder I ordered from MBclassics (not MB) won't fit, nor will the earlier ones. I'll post a photo at some point. Needless to say the part has been replaced on the EPC by a later one.

The 3 part nos I have
are
A 000 295 78 06 up to iden no 021245 LM =LHD MANUAL

A 000 295 87 06 from iden no 021246 LM=LHD MANUAL

A 000 295 53 06 ------------------------- RM= RHD MANUAL
Replaced by
A 000 295 85 06 + { A 000 997 08 86 = extra pipework?}

Looks like the RHD manual had a different master cylinder plus a bit of extra pipe work?

BREMBO LIST 2 TYPES

C 50 007

Bore Ø 23,81 mm, Cast Iron, Thread Size 14 x 1

C 50 018
for left-hand drive vehicles

Thread Size 12 x 1 Bore Ø 19,05 mm, Cast Iron

Hope this helps.

Ditto Graeme. My replacement is 295 85 06 which is totally different. I'll see if there's a repair kit available.

All the repair kits I can find seem to be designed for the 19.05 mm 12mm thread master cylinder which I think is for LHD.
I suspect ??? the RHD cars had the slightly larger 23.81 mm 14mm thread master cylinder.
Looks like this might require a bit a re-engineering / unit adaption - perhaps you can measure the bore size /thread of the existing unit?

A lot of googling throws up numerous equivalents, all showing 19.05mm, and all showing no stock. A few enquiries made.

The later master cylinder bolts into the clutch pedal and this carries on into the W123. So as an absolute fall back, I could see about fitting a W123 pedal.

What fun, fortunately not needed just at the moment.

An FTE replacement located and ordered. Let's hope it's the right one...

A lovely bright sunny winter day, made glorious summer by being driven in C43AMG's delightful CL55K AMG up to CCPS and D&M to look at progress and deliver yet more parts. Unfortunately I left my proper camera at home and the bright directional light meant my iphone photos are not usable. One hole found by the diff bracket (taking bits off is vital), but the subframe is now close to repainted, the rear has been cleaned up and crusty bits removed and painted, while the steering column is being refurbished and generally the progress is spectacular. Alas, I forgot to photograph the wheel trims, bonnet and boot which have all been done and being polished as we were there, but they are all looking really good.

After all my work rustproofing with POR15, it was decided to strip it all off - despite adhering to the instructions, cleaning it with the POR cleaner and priming it with the correct primer, it has started to flake, so off it has come. The clear injunction from Abz John is give no hint that rust can ever take hold again, so no chink in the armour.

Really delighted.

It was a great pleasure driving Charles up to CCPS, it was a glorious sunny day. Charles was very impressed with the re spray and as I am thinking of having the CL re sprayed and as I wanted to see Charles car, we killed a couple of birds + I saw his M5 and Alpina 3 series, great looking cars.

I met most of the lads that are working on Charles car, what a great bunch they are. The colour he has chosen looks fantastic and I was very impressed with the finish. The attention to detail is very impressive. Many thanks Charles.

Just a quick thought Charles. I used the cyl from a 124 to fit to the pedal cluster I had for the 107. It needed the pushrod swapping out from a 115 to get it to mate up, so it seems all is possible with a bit of phaffing about.

What was the reason behind swapping to a W124 MC from the R107, Druk?

The later W114/5s seem all to have the later pedal box configuration to work with the replacement MC I have, so that too is an option if the one I've ordered turns out to be wrong.

Because I had it in stock and it was relatively unused (although old in year terms). There was a mod involved (and you're surprised?) which was iirc mounting the cyl on a small plate and attaching said plate to the pedalbox because the bolt centres were slightly different. The pedalbox came from a 115 (also iirc).
