Miles Per Gallon

I recorded 65 mpg (C220 CDI) on a run from Neath, South Wales to Worcester one Sunday, this was on cruise in 6th gear, manual of course!
My car has 30K on it and according to the computer which hasn't been reset for 27K my average mpg over this period has been 48.8 mpg.
It looks as though the default on my trip computer is around 34 mpg which is what it starts at first thing in the morning and soon starts rising until it gets to 49 before I reach work 12 miles away.

Not visited the site or a while so a quick update:
Auto wipers are crap and on a sunny day will start wiping for no reason.
Car has been perfect since I bought it - no rattles, electrical problems runs like a dream. :bannana:

I own a Sprinter 213CDI Hi-Top medium wheelbase (equivalent of Long wheelbase Transit) vehicle. We have just returned from Boston Lincolnshire, a round trip of 720 miles. The average consumption was 36.2mpg. To say I am impressed is an understatment. Cruise Control is set at 75mph so it is not used at the most economical speed. Although the vehicle does have the Mercedes-Benz Sprint-Shift which is described as being more economical than the manual gearbox. The vehicle also contains some heavy electronic equipment but cannot be described as fully laden.

I would be interested to read Flash's comments as I know he is 'A white van man' Is my fuel consumption good, bad or average??

Regards,
John

Have had 52mpg from my E220cdi on a run and average 37mpg on local short runs. :) Petrol station sent me a get well card cos they don't see me so often. :D

MPG on Germany Trip

Having read the post about another potential trip to Germany, may some of the "veterans" can share with us the sort of mpg achieved during such trip ??? :D :D :bannana:

That is a very good question. what sort of speed do the nutcases ...... I mean gentlemen and ladies (Pammy) cruise at. My little car may not like carreering along at oodles of mph unless I can get a tow from Grav888 in his supercar (looks great in the logo). 105mph is a figure that i sometimes see but not for sustained distance. Does the group intend cruising at speeds much higher than that. On a slight tangent, if req'd I have access to 5 PMR446 radios that we can use to communicate between cars if required. ;)

Having less than half the bhp of any of the cars going (including yours!) I don't expect to be cruising much higher than said figure :(

Back on topic, I get 40-45mpg around town, anywhere between 30 and 60mpg on a run (depending on weight of foot :D)

I think I touched on this is another thread, but from memory last years German trip had a variety of speeds - some members averaging ~80Mph with short bursts, with others averaging ~95 100mph.

We generaly all stick together, with some people putting the pedal to the metal when the roads clear for a short burst. We then generaly slow down whilst the others catch up. :)

Is that pedaling as well ? :D

back to mpg

I can get 19-21mpg @85 on motorways, down to 13-15 town, and as low as 9 towing, the car is fantastic on motorways, so i dont mind, and i use the wife's a170 for local journeys as it doesnt seem to use any fuel???

I dont think I really want to know what mine is, but on the motorway I can just about squeeze 26mpg out of her, but I think the MAF sensor is on the blink, which may be reducing power and fuel consumption?

In my c36 I average 22-24 on a local work runs through a town, better on the longer runs.

I went on holiday to Spain a couple of years back with 4 in the car and full of luggage, I used cruise control all the time and spent most of the time on the motorway at 70-80mph, the car returned 34mpg on the way there and 32 on the way back.

I will say we used a different route on the way back, calling in Andorra and also coming up the center of France through the Central Massif, very hilly. But it was good fun, if you know the region, as sometimes the little french men in their little cars would go as fast as they could down the one hill and then struggle up the other side. I had great fun using cruise slowing them down on the one hill overtaking and then oozing away from them on the next hill, :p

I was very pleased with the economy though

Mpg

Just worked out the figures, since January 2004 when I bought the car averaged 27 mpg which aint bad for a 2.8 litre motor I think.

Returns 33mpg on longer motorway runs, what it does on short stop start journeys I don't know - or want to know.

No real difference if I use S or E mode on the selector or if the air con is on or off, so the air con stays on.

My dad has produced a fuel conditioning unit and I fitted one on Sunday.
It is a set of magnets and sits around the fuel inlet pipe.
It is said to increase performance, lower emmisions and increase mpg.
I normally get about 225 miles to a tank full, so will give it a couple of weeks to settle in and then report back with the results.

Have had this unit on the motor for a week and a half now and instead of 225 miles to the tank, I got 246 when the light came on.

So, 21 extra miles in 11 days doing the same journey and driving the same way will do me nicely :D
The unit is quoted as reaching it's optimum performance after 2000 miles, so hopefully I will get a few more miles later on.
I fitted 7 of these to neighbours cars last week too and they all say they are getting more mpg. :bannana: :bannana:

Any ideas anyone on why my E300TD seems to have a high fuel consumption even tho' performance is fine? Went from Liverpool to Bristol keeping between 80 - 90 with little holdups apart from a 20 min trickle along. A few miles around Bristol & then back again keeping between 90 - 100 & no holdups - a round trip of 442 miles & it used 15.4 gallons which works out @ about 28 to the gallon. Am I expecting too much or does this seem a little high? Over to you!!

In the last week or so I've been getting about 27mpg out of my 1998 c230k/auto. I've been doing 80-100 miles per day commuting, fairly even high-speed motorway and stop/start town driving. IMHO that sucks!

My car is desperate for a service and I *have* been pushing the poor thing pretty hard, I'm hoping the service and maybe a little less lead-footedness will help push that figure up closer to the 30s, I used to get 32mpg out of it!

On a long run M1/M25 and the wife driving (she has a lead foot) we got 36.4 mpg according to the trip computer. My 318Ci 2 litre valvetronic on the same run only managed 34 mpg!!

Thats another tick in my "why I prefer my Merc to BM's" box.

Checked mine over last 5000miles and she had done 35.? mpg. I have a 40 mile dual carraigeway commute spending 10mins in one town and 5 mins in another in traffic. Cruise set at 60mph on dual carraigeway with odd bits of town driving in the evenings. 570miles to tank was best so far
I think at those speeds 30-32 would be what i would get. Try a fully synthetic oil change and a new air filter and put your tyres to 33psi all round.
Also check that your tyres are not being worn unevenly.

32//45//mpg allround driving...find it best if i pick a spot on the acc pedel i try to hit that spot all the time and she just takes off ...i try to leave a good gap between me and the car in front before setting off..as i find i can out accelerate most cars without trying... then just end up ..on and off the gas which will not help mpg

It's just had an A service but I don't think that the air filter gets changed. I think I'll get one tomorrow & see what effect it has. I'll double check tyre pressures as well.

Thanks for advice.

Im averaging 38 MPG in my E270 Cdi which is a little better than i expected but alot of that is motorway.
As for my land rover i dont even bother checking because i know its gonna hurt but im only glad its not going to be anything like the Range Rover 4.6 Vogue i had a couple of years back which did around 12 MPG and cost around £100 a week to run. Doesnt that bring a tear to your eye?
