Miles Per Gallon

My 2002 W210 E320 CDI gets 22-28MPG around town and about 43-45 on a motorway run, 29-30MPG towing on a motorway.

On the 'Cruise vs No Cruise' discussion, I'm a big fan of cruise control and am sure it helps economy. This is because you change your driving style to ensure that you always get into the right lane early enough so you don't have to press any pedals - thus you end up keeping a much more constant speed on an averagely busy motorway while everyone else is accelerating/slowing down as they approach and get past queues of lorries.

Obviously this isn't always successful (there was one time on the M40 when I did actually have to PRESS a pedal - shock horror) but in general I think it helps not only MPG but also progress up the motorway.

I have just watched the re-run of Jeremy Clarkson driving from London to Edinburgh and back on a single tank of fuel.

On the motorway with cruise control engaged he was averaging 32mpg in the Audi V8 twin turbo diesel. However when he switched this off he got 40mpg!

My moan about driving with the fuel warning light on and ignoring petrol stations was highlighted by the fact that his fuel light came on at Nottingham and he carried on driving along the motorway, all the way back to London!!

Regards,
John

Not more than 20mpg on average (without really pushing it). I don't usually let it go below a quarter though as it takes far too long to wait for 100 litres of fuel in this weather.
Some pumps seem to take longer to put it in than the engine takes to whip it all out again !!

One for John to think about on whether to run the fuel tank low.

I recall from somewhere that one and a half litres of fuel weighs about a kilo. So if you always run your car with a full fuel tank and your tank holds say 70 litres, that's a 47 kilo load.

If you choose to run your car within the fuel tank limits of 1/4 to 3/4 then on average you'll only be carrying just 23-1/2 kilos of fuel.

Over a year, there could be a saving here.

c220 cdi est w202 auto trip box 108 k and 43 mpg brim tank to tank but do not run down fuel on cdi engine air lock on a pain to start needing a air hose from a garage to suck the fuel thro best fuel to use ???? i use shell or bp depends when needing to tank up new bp diesel highest cetane rating in uk seems more mid range poke

Completed 434 miles since last fill up. Trip computer showed average of 37.8mpg. In actual fact it was 34.44mpg. The reason for this must be the design of the computer where it counts down from 40 mpg at reset (which is a bit daft really).

Believe it or not I have been getting around 22mpg for a while now, the reason bieng that I'm in and out of London constantly and always seem to be in a hurry. :(

To all of you CDI merc owners... how does 14 mpg from my C43 sound to you ? (and this compares with the "official" 18-22 range for this model!!!).

Me thinks i should buy my own petrol station....

A mate of mine who once owned a Jensen Interceptor drove into a petrol station with a really large forecourt. His petrol light had come on. He only had a fiver on him (forgot his credit card) so put a fiver's worth of juice in. He drove it to the exit of the petrol station and got stuck behind three or four cars trying to get out onto the road (heavy tailback) - by the time he got to first in the queue to get out the petrol light came on again :D

Id be so depressed at this stage if it were me.

Edit:I get 300 miles per tank commuting to and from work and on a long run I have seen 400 mile

My last tank from Edna has just delivered 28.95 mpg :bannana: did include a nice run to Newcastle and back - taking only one hour twenty to for the 83 miles - including the looooooooooong 30 mph stretch through Gateshead :bannana:

I expect to be seeing less than 20mpg from Friday dinner time for a few days.  :D

But the grin on my face will be worth it.

Well, lets just say I got something done to make those huge AMG wheels and tyres really earn their keep.............its Super....

And, I really am grinning from ear to ear at the moment, well at least I wont have to waste any more weekends looking at other cars, I am happy again, the boredom has eased and it's not too bad a car after all.

I have been looking around, taken a few test drives but the grass is no greener, just more expensive, so I figured if I spent a few hundred quid on my car, keep it for another 18 months or so as planned I will be able to afford something newer and bigger (power wise).

When my fuel light comes on I can get about 60 litres into the tank at a squeeze. However, the tank is supposed to hold 83 litres so the gauge is showing the warning when I still have about a quarter of a tank! Bizarre.

On a run i've seen 29mpg at about 60-65 on the inside lane of a motorway. Normally at about 75 ish i get 23mpg. Around town if i'm careful 20mpg. Now I think thats pretty good for a 320ML compared to a diesel ML for which the fuel costs 7p a litre more round my way! These figures are what the computer shows me and are backed up by a brim to brim check.

I have come to the same conclusion re:no greener and more expensive grass.

but am intrigued: spent the few hundred quid on what??

do you think it makes a difference with the A/C, pre heater off? and what about driving in winter mode in town?

Go on Jimmy tell all.

Possible propane/ Lpg injection kit springs to mind.
