Mobil 1 fully synthetic £40 Kwik Fit !

I must say I get very confused about fully synth oil. When I noticed my M class was gulping oil at 6000 miles my local Indie reccommended Mobil 1 Full Synth. Being a belts and braces man I checked with MB Tech help. They were quite specific that I should use a partialy synthetic oil as:"....we only reccommend Fully Synth for high performance engines like AMG"

Who is right????

Is that the same MB that says not to change the oil in the gearbox?

It meets the requirements for both vehicles.

Cheers Simon - I always thought that diesel engines required a different formula... or is that just marketing spin??

Well, curiously Mobil1 and Mobil1 TurboDiesel are purportedly exactly the same thing. The Turbo Diesel is merely a branding exercise. The blurb on the back of the can is exactly the same, and both meet both petrol and diesel standards.

I posted earlier in this thread that an oil wholesaler told me that Mobil1 and Mobil1 Turbo Diesel are exactly the same oil but in different containers. He referred me to the data sheets, which, other than the words Turbo Diesel on one of them, were identical.

Indeed they are and indeed it is a marketing exercise.

Dieselman, thinking further, which oil is it that you use? I'm struggling to find any "diesel specific" fully synth oils. So far all the ones I've come across seem to be for both petrol and diesel

I'm using Millers XFD full synth diesel specific.
Diesel specific oils have a higher concentration of dispersant and Millers have a higher TBN (total base number) to better combat the effects of diesel combustion.
Diesel specific oils are no good for pertol engines due to the additives possibly creating piston crown deposits that could cause pre-ignition. They are however for releasing stuck piston rings etc.

Their XSS is apparently suitable for CDi engines under EU IV complience and is only semi-synth petrol oil. I presume the full synth will do as well or better. Maybe the additives are no good particulate filters. Oilman??

I always use a full synth for best protection of moving components and because full synth wont bake onto the turbo shaft and seals however hot it gets.

With semi-synth and synthetically enhanced oils you need to know the percentage of synthetic additive as there is no minimum. Millers use 60+% whereas some use a lot less. For example GTX Magnatec is a mineral oil which is just about allowed to sniff the synthetic vapour from the next fill line (allegedly), but seroiusly the PAO content is very low indeed.
Remember the dealers, certainly until recently, have been filling all non AMG cars with this stuff and it has approval to MB 229.1.

Oilman has a linky to the data sheets for Castrol but I don't wish to plagiarise without permission, however it clearly shows it to be a mineral oil.

If there were enough of you interested I could do Mobil1 0w-40 4L for £30 for 4L delivered to your door mainland UK.

I also have many others that would work out very good value on a group basis.

I notice that your website also lists Mobil1 15W-50, how much would these be per 4L? I need the extra weight for the Brabus unless you have better lubricants, maybe Motul? I notice Brabus now spec Aral but I have no clue where to get that and whether it really is any better than Mobil1?

Cheers

That stuff's pretty cheap (compared to Mobil1 etc) - first page on a Google search brings up a supplier at £18.80, although not clear about the VAT. Also it's in 5L containers, rather than the 4L that many other oils are supplied as.

At the end of the day, there's only one person who will service your car to perfection.....You! Youre only doing your car, you dont have another one in a queue and you dont have irate customers adding to the pressure,You will know exactly what's in the engine and if a bolt is to be tightened to 15nm torque, you'll know its been done.
A long time ago a college tutor told me this: ALL car engines are the same, some just have more plumbing around them. How true that is. If you can learn the basics youll save a fortune, have some confidence and have a go :-)

15W-50 isn't a very wide viscosity range now.
If you are struggling have a look here either at the automotive oils or competition oils, or give them a call, they will give advice.

Absolutely agree !

I think most garages pump the oil out through the dipstick tube. We have one at our workshop and it saves taking off the lower soundproofing and so saves time.

I looked at the data sheets on the Mobil website and they're identical.

How much is it at Costco? Been thinking of joining for their Michelin tyres.

Just checked.

Mobil 1 is £23.37 including Vat for four litre packs.

What are the specs of the oil?

5W/40 fully synthetic MB 229.3 etc. my guess it's an ExxonMobil group product as is Esso of course. The Esso Ultron says made in the UK on the can so they must have a synthetic plant here.

Castrol have a lot of infomation in pdf form on their website
