Modified Cars...

There are many more standard cars than modified cars, so you should still be able to find one you like :thumb:

Here's my old Volvo 850 that i modified from the subframe up but i always tried to keep the car looking as original and as functional as possible.

Power went from 225bhp to 297 bhp /256whp was great fun and made money on her when sold as it was all done well.

I also have an old Volvo 940 as it happens. :)

Yours is nice but mine has no mods as it's just a great reliable 2nd car.

Isnt there a slight safety issue as well in that other traffic can see through the car at oncoming vehicles and other hazards. Following a car with heavily tinted winded windows can be like following a van.
But its just my opinion but I prefer only minimal tinting if at all.

If you can't see oncoming traffic because the car in front has tinted windows here is a tip

YOU ARE TOO BL00DY CLOSE!!!!!!

The number of people who seem incapable of leaving more than 5ft from my rear bumper when travelling on an A road is astonishing....

It's not that I am out of touch with the modern styling, I just don't want to buy a used car that is not in original spec as it left the factory.

In my opinion a cars value is reduced by adding parts that were not there when it left the factory.

Both are possible.
My car is lowered, runs a stiffer rear anti roll bar and has different wheels (same diameter as before but wider) all to the benefit of handling and grip.
All the above is bolt on and with the exception of the wheels (easily obtained) I have all the original parts so could refit them at any time. Meantime, I get a better behaved on the road car. And no sign of barry.

Hmmm? :D

You never said that at the start.
You said tinted windows, bigger wheels and bolt on exhaust.
All the above could have come from the factory, not exhaust in the case of Mercedes but certainly genuine exhaust upgrades available from BMW.

I don't mind upgraded wheels etc. even body kits, but they have to be oem and not aftermarket tat.

I enjoy big wheels, blacked out windows, and multiple exhausts - all fitted by those barry boys at Mercedes Benz, i.e standard.

I have good taste, you have bad taste...

You would say you have good taste, I have bad taste...

We're both right; it just depends on the point of view.

Though having said that, I KNOW that I have good taste and you do not...

In my opinion

And that's exactly what it is.......your opinion ;)

I have tinted windows (Keeps the sun away from the kids and lets me pick my nose without anyone seeing)
Quad exhaust (Non OEM, although OEM is quad exhaust)
Larger wheels (19" to fit my 305 tyres on for aiding traction)

I'm aware some have called it a "Drug Dealers" car as you politely put it but just because it's Obsidian Black, has tinted windows, lowered suspension, uber loud exhaust, larger than stock rims and tyres doesn't mean it is.

Opinions are what forums are all about but sometimes posts are written without real thought..........or you are out of touch and an old **** :thumb:

When I was looking for a CLK and E-Series I noticed there were a lot of cars advertised that have what I would describe as boy racer/drug dealer modifications.

In your opinion maybe, were you looking for a beige one?

Maybe I am just getting old, but I would not even consider looking at cars with blacked out windows, larger than standard wheels, and bolt on exhausts.

So that's no AMG's, no Audi S-line, or BMW M power cars for you then.

It's the same story when looking at BMW's for sale, so have the Vauxhall Corsa brigade now moved up market?

I don't see the attraction of larger wheels as it increases tyre costs, and it's one reason I did not purchase a BMW, as most have 18-inch wheels.

Larger wheels house larger brakes, they also mount larger tires for more grip. Alot of the German cars come with 18" wheels as they are designed that way, they tend not to understeer off the road too.

I don't see any point in so called privacy glass/blacked out windows as what have you got to hide?

You wont know, as nosey people cant see in. Self explanatory realy.

All these are mods that also need to be declared to the insurers which will further increase costs, so I just don't see the point. Rant over!

The above is mostly factory options, so no need to declare anything. If your insurance charges you excessively perhaps you should change to another.

Or buy yourself a Toyota Prius.:dk:

Yes it does, but privacy glass and larger wheels and unnecessary extra exhaust pipes are a manufacturer trend these days.

That to me means the OP is out of touch with modern style(getting old).
Being an enthusiast doesn't make you a petrol head.

There's nothing wrong with liking what you like though.

But the OP isn't looking at a new car where the glass, wheels, exhaust etc. are an integral part of the design. He's looking at used cars where Barry has been at work and added his own "high street" version of these styling characteristics which more often than not look rubbish to people of any age who have a modicum of taste.

And being a car enthusiast does make you a petrolhead:

Urban Dictionary: petrolhead

Depends what you call "High street" though doesn't it? My car sit's on 18" bbs aftermarket wheels and I park it in the high street, does that count?

I'm fitting a Bose sound system to a w124 today, should I change my name to Barry?

No because by the sounds of it you are/have fitted quality parts which are sympathetic to the original design of the car.

That depends on the car but if it's a W124 then to me it would look entirely wrong regardless of where you park it. I wouldn't let a set of 18's anywhere near mine.

The good news is we live in a country where we have the freedom to modify (or not) our cars.

In many countries no form of modification is allowed at all!

That depends on whether or not you drive down the High Street with the windows wide open in all weathers, the volume turned up to maximum, playing either rap "music" (there's a missing letter in front of 'rap', I think,,,) or the special music they sell only to owners of bodykitted Corsas and the like.

"I'm aware some have called it a "Drug Dealers" car as you politely put it but just because it's Obsidian Black, has tinted windows, lowered suspension, uber loud exhaust, larger than stock rims and tyres doesn't mean it is."

Can't be helped if drug dealers like cars with the same modifications as you do. The difference, of course, is that their mods are pretty much purely cosmetic, while yours are mostly to improve the driving experience.

And, of course, theirs are in bad taste, while yours are not...

Is this a car or a locomotive?
