Modified Cars...

Is this a car or a locomotive?

Be MUCH cheaper just to get a sunscreen strip across the top of the windscreen reading "Knob", and would create the same impression on most people.

It's not that I am out of touch with the modern styling, I just don't want to buy a used car that is not in original spec as it left the factory.

In my opinion a cars value is reduced by adding parts that were not there when it left the factory.

Your more than welcome to come and have a look at mine and tell me its not as good as a standard C55.

Don't think Joe will be too happy.:D

You just sound like a boring old fart IMO.

Your new C55 is stunning

Less is more in my opinion. However beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Besides isn't the AMG/BRABUS or in bmw case the M / Alpina variants just moded version of standard cars only difference being their factory modded?

In conclusion for me personally if it's done right it has the potential enhance the over all look.

I've always been told that you can modify your own car as much as you want, but don't expect anyone else to like it or pay premium price for it.

So....the solution it to modify it in any extreme a way you want, but not in a way that's irreversible.

That is, if you want top-dollar, sell a bog-standard car and pander to the next owner’s prejudices.

I’ve followed this advice and (with the exception of my last Audi Allroad) always managed to sell-on for a price I’m happy with.

The OP is just echoing the voice of the majority. And that’s the market segment you should be aiming at when you come to sell-on.

He’s just as likely to buy a car that had a 3” exhaust, megawatt Sound System and 22” wheels the weekend before….

It helps if you don’t come out dressed head to foot in Hollister/whatever this weeks chav fashion is, when you meet the potential buyer.

And yes, I’m old (very old)….

I'm sure if any drug dealers had any sense at all whatsoever, they wouldn't be driving round in chavved up 'look at me' cars, attracting attention.

Don't believe what you see in the movies. If that was the case, every driver owning a standard R'Rover Hse or R32 is a drug dealer...

Ridiculous general stereotype and also another reason why I've constantly been pulled over by the police since the start of my driving days, can someone not own a decent (modded OR factory) car without being branded as a criminal? Ha...

This thread reads like minutes taken from an OAP home meeting :D

Well, yeah, but they have millions to spend on top designers to painstakingly trial different designs and many variations on each until it's refined into a look that a lot of people would agree works.

A lot depends on the marque. For instance most enthusiasts won't buy an Impreza unless it has had some of the more sensible performance and styling modifications, but with Mercedes there is not the same level of acceptance due to the marque's prestige image (or the fact it seems to attract a lot of snobs to put it less politely).

There is still an element of horses for courses with any marque and some people are always going to do things you may or may not like, but that's life. My SL engenders comments from both sides of the fence.... some people like it, others say I have wrecked it, but frankly I don't give a damn what anyone else thinks of it as it's not their car!

Privacy Glass :- You're all missing the point with "Privacy Glass", my previous Passat CC came with privacy glass as standard and when I had my two grandchildren in the car on sunny days they weren't constantly shielding their eyes from the glare of the sun all the time and they could see out with no problem. My "E" class doesn't have privacy glass and my grandchildren have often got their hands up to cover their eyes or squinting because of the glare.

It's all very well saying each to his own and beauty is in the eye of the beholder but it's not just about modding. The manufacturers in general have been influenced to produce cars which in many cases have a poor ride just to make the wheels and tyres look good. It's typical of a fashion fad that's been taken too far. I don't deny that some of these cars look good but if it's at the expense of function I'm not remotely interested. Mercedes should have risen above at least the worst of this fad and to be fair they have made some of their larger cars ride well in spite of the wheels. At one time they would never have put form before function, they just made the best. Cars with a poor ride are not the best.

I had a ride in one prestige German coupe that had a ride so bad it was seriously beyond belief. The driver actually had to slow down on a moderately bumpy road. What sort of nonsense is it when a sports car drives so badly it has to slow down. But not to worry it did look good and that's what seems to count these days.

I don't like black windows, mainly as I had them on an ML300 Sport I once owned and nearly had two accidents at night as a result of not being able to see out of them clearly. I'm put off them for this reason but I also think they look odd on some cars, particularly pillar less coupes with only the rears tinted as it ruins the pillar less lines of the car.

What irritates me is when you "have" to have the dark windows on a new car which seems common now with many models. Having the choice of tints or no tints should be available.

I don't like huge alloys (tend to make a harsh ride) or over the top bodykits. But I do like 80's/90's SEC's with AMG bodykits.

I'm also very fond of these which are highly modified but still manage to retain all of their 70's
flair. Normally Aspirated | Jensen International Automotive

So I like some modifications but not others.

I don't fully understand the search for huge (extreme not just a remap or tweak) Horsepower outputs that make the car delicate and virtually unusable day to day for fear of problems. But it floats some peoples boats.

Easy, get some blinds that you can pop in when the grand kids get in.

Two boys, the blinds wouldn't last 5 minutes.
I think BMW originally marketed their darkened rear windows as "Sun protection glass" which says it all really.

This I agree with.

Reversing for me (although as company policy to reverse everywhere I could do it with my eyes closed by now) can be a pain. The Windows on mine are tinted at the rear windows and the rear windscreen. Reverse light isn't the brightest on mine so it's always a head out the door job

If it was a reasonable cost to remove the tints I would, although I don't mind them on the rear windows as its like a completely different climate in the back during the summer :thumb:

Well I wonder what response this would get on a Jag forum :D
