Modified Cars...

When I was looking for a CLK and E-Series I noticed there were a lot of cars advertised that have what I would describe as boy racer/drug dealer modifications.

Maybe I am just getting old, but I would not even consider looking at cars with blacked out windows, larger than standard wheels, and bolt on exhausts.

It's the same story when looking at BMW's for sale, so have the Vauxhall Corsa brigade now moved up market?

I don't see the attraction of larger wheels as it increases tyre costs, and it's one reason I did not purchase a BMW, as most have 18-inch wheels.

I don't see any point in so called privacy glass/blacked out windows as what have you got to hide?

All these are mods that also need to be declared to the insurers which will further increase costs, so I just don't see the point. Rant over!

Dunn & Co. have some lovely beige cardigans & brown hush puppies in the pre-xmas sale if you're interested :D

What this thread clearly does demonstrate is that over the years Mercedes have moved from building an old man's car to a young man's car. And what ever age we are we were all young once so we will recall that priorities are different. Young men never did want to be seen in an old man's car and old men may not appreciate all of the qualities of a young man's car if form has taken excessive priority over function.

If Mercedes didnt move with the times, they would have ended up like Jaguar, passed around various manufactures made out of Parts bin switch gear before ending up owned by a foreign company - or worse, like Rover!

The are selling more cars than ever, they must be doing something right!

I have a feeling the same people who don't like modified cars in this thread are the ones who specced birds eye maple in a couple of the C63's I looked at.

At the ripe age of 20 I am ashamed to say I specced it on my CLK350 Cab but now I'm learning the error of my ways in favour of carbon fibre.

Tinted windows are a lovely addition to a car but interestingly my C63 hasn't got privacy glass. Must be rare to have one without.

Usually best mods are the one's that can't be seen. :D

Your new C55 is stunning

Thanks HB, yeah Joe really did a great job with it. Last few owners probably didn't give it much love, but its already getting some love with me, ready for winter.

And I can tell the OP that the coilovers on this C55 are a massive improvement over stock. It feels a lot more planted in the corners.

You simply cannot beat a good suspension kit. I lower all my cars where possible and always use bilstein b8 shocks. I cannot stand soft floppy road behaviour.

Don't lower the 63 too much Harry or it wont fit the horsebox hitch.

HB can you recommend a Suspension kit & Which Bilsteins for a C32...but I dont want it soild so every ripple in the road is a Ball ache.

I am sure the sight of a 63 year old grey head driving around in a Lorinser kitted SL R107 , with BBS alloys must be "very wrong " in some peoples opinion . However , it also gets lots of compliments , but either way, I bought the car because I like the way it looks ( other than the Stevie Wonder paintwork, which does not bear close scrutiny). My C240 Elegance is pretty much as it left the factory , with the only aftermarket item being a CD player . I also really enjoy this ( free) car , and the only item I may add will be a set of non-stock alloys. As SPX remarked , many current car models look very similar , leaving the owners to modify as they wish. Personally , it makes no difference to me whether others like or dislike the styling of my car. In the words of the immortal Kevin "bloody" Wilson DILLIGAF. :D

It's surely a case of do whatever you want to your car. It's your car so up yours to anyone who doesn't like it.

The options you can get on a car now are decided at the manufacturers by... people, and the mods done to cars after the factory are done by... people.

Old people - stop wasting the little time you have left moaning about it and get on with something productive. :thumb:

I've always gone for Eibach springs with bilstein b8 shocks. I reckon it's called a B12 kit. This is what's on my S211. It's so good on the motorway it doesn't lurch or sway or go vertical at all. It just sits there. Also it's totally comfortable.

Thanks for that but I have just realised that the C32 already uses's Bilsteins, so maybe i need the B14 kit ?

Coilovers, H&R or Bilstein, revolutionise the car totally.
