More road tax for 'gas guzzlers'

I like the idea of having annual road tax brackets based on the number of cylinders (or something similar which generally categorises the car). Leave the fuel price alone, and make incentives for more eco-friendly fuels.

Smart cars obviously in the bottom car bracket with their 660cc three cylinder englines
V12 monsters in the highest tax bracket with displacements of 6/7/8 litres.

Like this: http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/qt/LTASinfo.nsf/index/registration_fees

I'd peg the average car in this country as 4 cylinder, so no real inconvenience if that rate is similar to the current rate.

Am I right in thinking that road tax here only has two brackets?

we already have a road tax system based on CO2 emissions .. just use that but increase the difference in £££ between the lowest and the highest rates, with more bands

Hang on, I have a 3.6 AMG, if tax is increased based on how many cylinders you have I'll get stuffed. I only do about 5000 miles per year so will be using less fule than a bloke in a 1.1 fiesta....How is this fair????
Surely, the only way to fairly pay for this 'Road Tax'(More like stealth tax on motorists again) is to base it on how much fuel you actually use as its supposed to be linked to environmental issues etc.

I think £170 is sufficient to pay for the repairs required to our existing road infrastructure which is what the tax is supposed to be for. I will definitely protest if these plans go ahead!!!!!!!

Ultimately the roads will become "user pays". People who use the roads more will be taxed more (mileage), however there will still probably be brackets for use based on the perceived impact of your vehicle (cylinders, capacity, economy, etc.).

Hopefully it's a long way off though.

I don't really have a problem with capacity/cylinder based brackets. Wish they'd impost it on the Americans first though.

Maybe if enough people drove a Toyota Prius round London, it would do Ken out of enough congestion charge revenue to prove how pointless a tax it is!!

Either that, or SUDDENLY, the rules would change for exemptions!

The congestion charge tax rant is in another thread. ;-)

(PS - I live here and I like the tax)

I'll get my coat!

If aero fuel was taxed at the same level it would literally cost thousands to fly anywhere, which would upset a LOT of people.

But at least we wouldn't flood the Med with thousands of pissed chavs every summer :D

errr no ! It already works that way, The more fuel you buy the more tax you pay none of which is spent improving the roads

fuel is a write off in my mind, they just tax it for the hell of it and don't spend any of that on good - it'll never change though.

it`s all a load of bollocks. cars only contribute a small percentage of the total co2 emissions but we get hit the hardest for it. wheres the taxation on industrial and aviation polluters. do you think its because they have more leverage with the government? I despise this countrys attitude to drivers, if it wasn`t for my better half i`d piss off to america in a flash.
