My new Toy CLS 55 AMG

Tbh I could bear the outdated interior as long as there were no rattles coming from anywhere in the car! Are any grand edition owners experiencing any rattling within the car??

maybe worth starting your own thread rather than hi-jacking this one :)

Rattling frickin passenger head rest!!

Well I finished work at just before one today (half day on Fridays), and drove from Portsmouth to Horndean to PCS for a general check over, fluid levels etc.
Well it was found that the driver's seat back/forward and the seat base up/down motors have duff hall sensors, but they will not normalise, looking at the wiring this was all intact indeed the motors click when the switch is activated, which seems to indicate that the motors are seized. It looks like someone has jammed something under seat and then tried to move the seat potentially burning the motors out :(
The sunroof was then fixed as it was only partially closing and then opening up again, this just proved to be something to do with the anti pinch mechanism/switch, re-synchronised and all is good. Dynamic seat passenger side, when switched on the LED in the switch would just flicker, this was fixed and proved to be just a loose air pipe connection on the seat.
Gearbox oil level checked and this was a bit high so about 1/2-1 litre of ATF was removed, level now spot on.
On the ramp, brake pipes fuel/air lines etc all good, no oil leaks on the engine and gearbox, though there was some evidence of a previous leak from the rocker covers but this had been previously sorted, and a couple arms had been replaced at some point in the past, but the driver's lower and passenger side upper ball joints do need replacing.
The brakes slight perishing on rear flexis and the rear discs have a lip on them but no immediate need to replace at this time.
There seems to have been much talk regarding the wheels and tyres on the car, well the wheels appear to be straight but the rear tyres are shot, plenty of tread, but there are three bulges in the inside edge of the rear passenger side, one really rather huge and another two on the inside of the rear driver's side. The passenger side tyre was so bad that Olly really didn't want me driving the 45 miles home on it and looking at it I am sure you will agree,

Well taking Ollies advise and not having a courtesy car available at such short notice he dropped me of at the local train station.
Waiting at the train station I had phone call from PCS workshop from Graham with prices of the parts, so jobs being done,
2 new upper ball joints.
2 new lower ball joints.
1 new interior door handle (chrome peeling).
1 back/forward seat motor.
1 up/down seat motor.
Not sure regarding the tyres yet, whether to get another set of 19" wheels/tyres, or just to replace the two rear tyres on the original wheels, though looking at the make of the tyres and what has happened to the rear ones I think I should be replacing all four really.
What ever I do it will have to make my decision quick.
Now you may say that is a lot to repair considering I have just bought it but I knew about the cheap tyres on the wheels and expected I would replace them or buy a set of original 19" wheels, and also knew the seat didn't adjust and decided on taking a punt on it as it is quite common for them to stop working and needing re-synching via. STAR.
As I knew these things were wrong with the car the price reflected the faults, though to be honest I did,nt expect the expense of the seat, specially as one of the motors cannot be replaced and only comes as part of the seats lower base.
All said and done even with all the expense it will still be a cheap car, though I will say it is rather annoying but I cant wait to get it back all repaired :)

Those rear tyres look real death traps. Good call getting the train home.
Hope all is resolved soon!

All sounds good mate.
What ever used car you buy there'll always be something needing doing...
My Golf cost me nearly a grand within 2 months. Some of the stuff I knew about, some not. It's all part of the game!

Nice car Andy :thumb:

Probably would of gone for one of those if I had been in your shoes, or a late W209 55/63.
I would keep them wheels and put the original badges and grill back on the car, as the standard wheels are horrible

I was looking at 209s 55/63s, E class 55/63s, CLS 55/63s, and really did,nt have clue what to have, but decided it had to be a blown 55 or 63, and when I went to look at a Black CLS 63 just before Christmas I was smitten, as the CLS has such a presence.

Well I have had a phone call from PCS this afternoon, telling me apart from the tyres (which I said I would sort out) the car is ready to be picked up.
From being frightened of a possible bill of £1.5k for just the seat repair, the seat repair is now less than an hours labour, as further investigation revealed that whatever the previous owner had under the seat had managed to partially drag out the pins in the plug to the control unit under the seat, the seat is now fixed and working.
I have decided for the time being to stick to the wheels that are on the car, but I will replace them with a set of AMG 19s at some point in the future.
I have ordered the tyres from Mytyres.co.uk, Falken 453s, interesting to note the tyres on the car were the wrong size according to the Alloy wheels direct site, fitted to the car were 275/30/20 but should be 285/25/20.

20" wheels were never an OEM option

That is one fabulous car.

Must. Resist. The. 55k. Itch........

You have just made it much harder.....

20" wheels were never an OEM option

I know, 18"s standard, 19" optional, but if 20's are fitted like mine then you have to keep the rolling radius the same, the profile of the 20" tyres fitted are the same profile of the 19" tyres and should be one size less.

After a lot of thought, also because of the awful way it drove I decided to change the wheels and I have now fitted new badges to the car with the exception of the V8 Kompressor badge on the wings, also a new front grill, and got the rear windows tinted.
With the new wheels fitted and the four new ball joints PCS fitted to it in January I got the car a 4 wheel alignment, it now drives spot on more like a Mercedes should here are a few pics of it now, fitted with the new private plate too. :bannana::thumb:

Looking very nice indeed. Plate really sets it off!

I think a much improved look, I am starting to feel the love for it now :thumb:

Great wheels Andy and the car is looking great.

Thank you Peter for your positive comments.

What do people think of the replacement grill as I would of preferred a standard OEM one but couldn't justify the expense of a new MB one and couldn't find a second hand AMG one at the time.

Not a purist choice but I really like it.
