My new Toy CLS 55 AMG

The ride is much better on 18s again despite what I previously thought and the handling is much more precise if that makes sense.

good to know .. here endeth my 19" contemplations :)

19s did grip better but gave way quicker. However, the ride was noticeably less compliant and handling was 'sloppier', for want of a better expression...

In reality, there is probably less than a 1% chance I will bother with 20s as it would only be worse than the 19s on mine.

If you care more about driving and ride quality than looks, 18s are definitely the way forward IMO! MB know what they are doing...

probably because the 19" are heavier, so more unsprung mass.

did you happen to weigh your 18 and 19 wheels by any chance?

No but I changed them over myself and the 19s were noticeably heavier!

Hi,
Since my last update I have done and have planned several more jobs, first on the list was a wheel re-furb. The last Annual PCS, "Benz on the Green meet" I won a a free wheel re-furb at the Alloy Wheel Specialist in Fareham. I had planned to get the C43/55 18" Monoblocks done, I was coming back from booking them in when I had the accident that wrote my beloved 202 AMG off so had to cancel this appointment till such time I had a replacement car.
Well having fitted the 19" AMGs to my CLS I did,nt like the non OEM silver colour of them and the way it contrasted to the black paintwork. I decided to get the colour changed so after a visit to the alloy wheel specialist after a long time choosing I decided to opt for a black chrome 3, wheels are powder coated black entirely, then they are flash coated 3 times with a silver.
Pic of how the wheels looked before the colour change

A coupe of pics of how they look now n their new colour Black chrome 3, in the sun they really pop as the silver particles really stand out, to be honest these pics don,t really do them justice and look superb in the flesh. The Alloy Wheel Specialist did a superb job the car was dropped off at their depot at 8 in the morning and the whole job finished by 5 in the afternoon excellent service, nothing was to much.
The pics of the wheels after,

Great looking cars these, like nothing else on the road and that's a refreshing change!

Look great Andy. Much better than the usual silver.

Did they manage to get rid of that dink?

Strangely, I prefer the profile of the rear tyres even though they are wrong for your car!

Nice!

Might want to try and Hammerite the rear wheel hubs as they look rusty? Mine where and look far better now in black.

Hi John,
Yes they got rid no problem at all though when they took the tyres off though they found the other front wheel had cracked at the old repair. Got it welded on the same day. This almost seems to be expected on this type of wheel.

Yes I agree, but as the rear discs have a lip on them (bought the car knowing this) when I replace the rear discs I will give the hubs a coat of black or silver.
To be honest as soon as I need to have any work done to the brakes I will get new discs and pads front and rear with a set of braided lines fitted.

Jeez. Under my watch, they never hit anything more than literally a couple of what I would class as not very deep potholes (I know exactly where they all are on my way to work and back). My confidence that they had never been down anything remotely tough (let alone make you wince) meant that I was very surprised when you told me one had gone on the weld and now the other!

Did they do it as part of the refurb?

I wonder if they just crack through use or slight bumps or whether the weld is not as strong as the strength of the original wheel...

I remember Developer John posting up that he had had crack(s) on his fronts.

I think BMW 19s went through this once upon a time although I imagine it is rife now all over the shop as wheels get larger.

Apart from the ride and handling on mine, that would be another reason to not go for 20" Vossen CV-3s like I was once going to...!

a set of braided lines fitted.

will these make any difference to an SBC equipped car?
