My New W209 CLK - Large Modding Project

Lovely Car dude , i was looking at CLK's too. The 270 engine in my 203 was amazing and frugal. ive seen 60mpg on it with a light foot. Also pre EU4 and no Particulate filter.

Id miss out comand and go for an aftermarked double din DVD based nav system with integrated bluetooth and pre outs etc and an interface module for the dash and wheel controls :) Sorted without all the comand annoyances :)

Ive gone down the sensable route and bought a 118d Msport :)

Whats Jay done with yours? It's not on the website yet.....

Im glad your search did not take too long!

Very nice, looks stunning. What LED bulbs did you use to replace the stock sidelights? I'm looking to change my stock sidelights as they have the horrible yellow tinge which coupled with the Xenons doesn't look good. Do they throw any errors out as well? Any help would be gratefully received. :)

If you need a hand getting those AMG badges off, give me a shout...

I agree. My CL had 65 AMG's "V12 bi-turbo" badges plastered all over it when I bought it. Binned them all.

The car looks very clean, congrats. You must be thrilled!

Looks really good, nice and clean too.

Just a couple of pointers on the technical side.

Get a glycol test done on the ATF when you change it and change it you must if you have no history for it. I have done a few gearbox re-builds recently and none of them has had an ATF change in the past. The 270 engine is quite torquey so the gearbox can take a battering. Use injector cleaner too. It works.

The front suspension can wear like no other car. Suspension arm bushes, ball joints and roll bar links are all common to wear as well as snapping springs.

If you ever want more power a re-map or tuning box makes them go like the clappers. Also the ride and handling can be a bit soft. A good set of springs and roll bars makes the world of difference.

Never a huge fan of the 209, but that one do look very nice.

I sell them myself, have a search in the classified section

Thanks, seen its easy to get it above 200Bhp, tempting although im still in awe at its pulling power already :)

I wasnt a fan at all until I saw a W209 with an AMG kit.

Very nice CLK chap :thumb:

I'm averaging circa 19mpg in my new wagon - not jealous at all at your 46.2mpg  (mind you, that's 19 miles of ear to ear grinning :D)

Got 48.1mpg last night on a 20 mile drive driving with all 4 windows down. I reckon 50+ is easy to reach :D

Mods have started :) (not fitted though)

Very nice.
Here's your target :
70mpg.jpg

Mine was well behaved on 16s, 17s and 18s but a little harsh on bad surfaces when i went to 19's. I wouldn't recommend them.
Interesting what olly says about the suspension set up being a bit soft. I always found mine too hard, with the original sport springs and also after i changed all 4 springs/shocks. Was always too hard for my liking, even with 16's on.

Enjoy it, and every time you get 600+ miles from a tank, it brings a sad geeky smile to your face.

Wow, how did you do that? you being towed? :D

Mine was always about 10% optimistic on the readings compared to tank to tank fills.
I usually got about 60mpg on my daily commute. Always about 35 minutes to do the 29 miles.
This was a particularly clear day with no traffic and i was trying every tactic known to man to get that figure.
I can honestly say i couldn't squeeze another 0.1mpg out of that baby!
I think the range was showing 900 miles or something with 3/4 of a tank!
My best in my S320cdi is 57mpg on the same run, but the computer is a little bit more accurate on this one!

Nice CLK Karl :thumb:

Consider 19's.

My 63 came with 18" AMG's and I personally thought they were too small for the car. They really weren't big enough in my opinion and, contrary to what Sean says, weren't in proportion to the car.

19's sit nicely :thumb:

Your ride won't be compromised too much either.
By the sounds of it, you'll probably end up swapping out the shocks and springs - meaning you'll prefer a stiffer ride. So 19's won't bother you at all.

Karl

Just make sure you get some Kumho tyres like those on Rash's car (remember to highlight "Kumho" in gold/white to let the world know you have them) .. if they are good enough for a V8, they must be good enough for an oil burner :D
