Wonder if any of you good folks have experience with this.

Every service, John Griffiths sticks a litre of synth top-up oil in the boot. Normally i will top up and get through a litre in about 6,000 miles or so.

My engine is the 2.8 litre straight six, 24 valve.

Is this a normal sort of oil consumption for an engine with 80k ?

My E280 W210 1999 never used a full litre between services 12000 miles.

When I sold it it had 40000 on the clock.

So yours sounds a bit thirsty, but not excessive at the moment mate.

I wonder if it might be to do with the difference in engine - I think your previous 1999 model had a V6 and is quite a different design ?

This is true, it was a V6.

Dealers have always supplied a litre of oil with the v6's that ive had. Not sure why, never needed to use it!

When I opened my boot before leaving whitefield after the last service, I saw they had put a bottle of oil next to the bottle of oil they put there at the previous service, still unopened. I took the bottle into the parts dept and got a refund for it ;) .

Mine (V6) has only ever needed a litre of oil between services once (that was at about 65K, now at 102K)

I think you'll find this is still well within manufacturers tolerances, and nothing like the "Oliver Reed" style Avensis company car I once had - that did about 8 litres of Texan Tea between (10K) services. Thank God I never paid for the oil.

Thanks for that guys.

I know know that my engine lies somewhere between a teetotaller and Oliver Reed.

Richard Harris perhaps ?

My V6 has never used oil and I've never been supplied with a bottle from the dealer either. However, I do carry a litre as I used to carry one with my previous 190E, that used to pass oil round the valves and valve guides.

The inline 6 engines have a reputation for weeping oil from around the head area, especially if you read posts from pre-facelift C280 owners. Most advice I've seen recommends that so long as the oil weeping isn't too extreme then it shouldn't be a cause for concern. There should be loads of posts on this subject over at MBOA and probably a few on this forum too.
